I GOT A VAN!
I introduce to you Gloria. She’s a freakin heartthrob!
Seriously, words can’t describe the impact that van-life has had on my soul. The mixture of solitude and loving van community on the highway; this has created such a safe and open space for reflection and healing for me. This one practical lifestyle change has probably been the number 1
factor for mental health recovery in my life. I’ve already done 2 Byron trips and a Victoria trip, and I just can’t get enough. I lost my dear Suzi the Suzuki via hail-damage car-death, and she’s resting in automotive Valhalla as we speak. RIP. But from death comes new life and new love. I love you Gloria and want to cherish you with everything I have.
I’m honoured to now be part of the @vanlifediaries family - and this global fellowship has been extremely important to me in this evolving season of mine. The van life gathering in Crescent Head was all time - sharing stories, surfing, music and participating in communal conversation around mental health.
On behalf of the @vanlifediaries family I’m hosting a special one-time Sydney screening of the film The Meaning Of Vanlife, Sunday May 12th at The Ritz Cinema // it’s directed by legend @jim_lounsbury. We just sold out the recent screening in Arizona and are planning to do the same in SYD! I’ll have you know the film just won “Best Foreign Documentary” at @azfilmfest.
To reserve your tickets, please visit the Demand Film Event Page via the Van Life insta.
Come for a hang with Gloria and I soon. Bil x

I haven’t always liked being me. Honestly. I used to hate having short asian legs. Many of my mates in my developing years were tall and lean like Spartans and I couldn’t help but feel imperfect and weak. I used to hate the sound of my singing voice. My brother Jonno naturally has a deeper, rounder and more masculine vocal tone, and I couldn’t help but feel that my voice was annoying and too feminine sounding. I used to hate that I sucked at maths and science. I struggled so much in Highschool that I’d constantly be looking over at my friends workbook for answers. Funnily enough, my mum is asian and was a science teacher, and I couldn’t help but feel stupid and like I missed out on some of the more intellectual asian DNA. I used to hate being an emotionally sensitive male. I hated not being able to grow a legit beard. Not realising that I’m slightly dyslexic, I hated my propensity to stumble with my words in public, especially in front of an audience. I hated my average ability at ball sports.. Today I choose to love being me, to love me and to love ALL of me. The golden rule that Jesus spoke about asserts to “love your neighbor as yourself.” For the majority of my life I’ve misheard this ancient maxim. I haven’t loved myself, and thus I have not been able to completely love others. Now I freakin froth being Billy. I love being short, I love the colour of my skin, I love my crooked rabbit teeth.. even though I venerate Matt Corby’s voice, I love my voice and wouldn’t change anything about its imperfections. I love my sensitive melancholy soul. I feel things more than the average male and write emotive songs for days. So, if you’re struggling with any fragment of self hate today, know that you’re not alone. I just know that gratitude for your human changes everything. Celebrate your human, relish in it, embrace all of it. As my brother would always say in his galvanising school speeches, “You’re a critically endangered species, there’s no one in the world like you.” Take care of yourselves legends. Compassion and care for the greater humanity first comes from a deeply girded space of love for yourself. Become your biggest fan. X Bil @shannonglasson
THE GREAT SOUTHERN OCEAN ROAR. After 15 hours driving in the desert, surfing incredible waves & sleeping under the stars, there we were; surrounded by a whost of curious sea lions. Possibly one of the more mystical and glorious moments of my life. We climbed down a rugged cliff in our sandals, cladded with cameras. Finally reaching the rocky shore, the atmosphere honestly led us into a deep moment of pause and contemplation. We gazed as the mother stood her ground, oozing with such a regal and protective spirit over her darling pups as the siblings played together. My profound sense of jubilation was also mingled with grief and despondency. I couldn’t help but think of the vulnerable state of our oceans. Plastic contamination, climate change, overfishing, powerful oil companies intoxicated with the fiction of mass capital gains..The list goes on. I feel within my solar plexus the oceans anxiety as it absorbs all this negativity and trauma from the land. But I don’t want to live in a place of hopelessness and nihilism. Everyday I can make decisions with my mind, heart, wallet and time. I had to ask myself “What is my footprint? Do I really consider my waste? Is eco-protection part of my conversations? Alongside my friends @iamlaurawells & @wadecarmichael I’m so honoured to be part of the @pipinghotaustralia team, and through our #ForCleanOceans range we were able to recycle 1.7 Million plastic bottles. Thats a flipping massive amount of up-cycled polyethylene and polystyrene! I believe that sustainable clothing options should be available at an affordable price point and PH is one of the first brands to be able to offer this in Australia. I can wear this jacket with pride knowing that it was made mindfully and ethically.
Before even buying a jacket like this, ask yourself - do I even need it? Why am I so flipping obsessed with new things? Whether we shop organic or not, it still takes around 2,700 litres of water to make one t-shirt. We all consume but may we desire to grow mindfully as conscious consumers.
I am for thriving oceans, and I want my kids to be able to find themselves in the water like I did and still do. @joelslade #fightforthebight
