Damn, is this why I've been going through some dark shit the last few days?!? Like seriously... I've lost a couple pieces of jewelry, which may not seem like a big deal, but I never usually lose stuff like that. I broke the zipper on my favorite dress. Also something truly horrible happened that's too gruesome to share but let's just say it broke my heart and I've been fighting off depression ever since. Oh! And I found out my insurance won't cover my new crown on my root canal so, yeah, that's like a $1200 out of pocket expense. For a flicker of a moment I wondered if someone put a hex or a curse on me but I typically don't fall prey to those because I keep my protections up pretty hardcore (and I just recently upgraded my wards). So then, of course, my mind goes it must be something up with the planets/stars... (That or just random chaos messing with me.) Is anyone else going through it right now? But at times even more essential than the words they are using is what they are feeling, sensing, or imagining, but unable to access consciously. That which we cannot access we cannot articulate, and that which we cannot articulate we cannot make sense of and integrate. This “other” we’re sitting with is not only those persons external to us, but the inner other in all its disguises, manifesting as dissociated feeling, unmetabolized grief, repressed rage, frozen joy, blocked creativity, and the entirety of our unlived experience. One of the gifts of embodied presence—that capacity to attune to the moment-to-moment unfolding of the other’s subjectivity—is to help them access dimensions of self that have either fallen outside conscious awareness or never had a chance to come into it in the first place. If a certain emotion, way of being, or mode of perception was not allowed in our early experience, it becomes lost in a faraway space, in an in-between realm where we cannot access it. From this liminal dimension it calls out, longing to come home, emerging by way of dream, symbol, and symptom, not to harm but as part of the sacred return. Soul is not inside us, but we are inside it, and there is a hidden sanctuary there of profound resource, capacity, and safety. It is a wisdom-field where lost pieces of psyche, body, and heart are illuminated and reorganized by way of a vast mercy and compassion. At times, we are given a glimpse beyond the veil and stand in awe at the activity of love.
