There’s something special about searching for the materials that I create on. It involves going out into nature, looking for hidden gems of wood with surfaces flat enough to paint on. This hunt requires patience, because a lot of the time that I look for this type of wood, I find none. It’s become an important part of my artistic process- heading down to the beach, or to my friends @vashon_wood_works lumber yard in the woods, to seek out the most beautiful wood pieces to paint. Turning creativity into a full time job isn’t easy. This app has a way of glorifying many things, including the life of an artist. And my day to day life probably looks a lot different than it might seem. I spend a lot of time on the computer- emailing, coordinating paintings and projects, updating my website, etc... Working very late nights. I don’t paint all day long everyday- most days at least. I also struggle to take an days ‘off’ ever. That’s why I make time for unique projects like this one- painting my van just for fun! These types of projects help maintain my passion and stoke on this crazy journey of being an Artist. What I’ve learned from being an artist over the past few years is that real art has to come from the heart. It can’t come from a place of trying to please others, or wanting to sell it, or a place of wanting to get attention and post it. This type of ‘art’ won’t last. But it’s such a fine line to walk when it’s your job! True creation happens when you’re in touch with yourself- when you love the practice, not the final product. It doesn’t matter if you sell one piece of art or 1000 over your lifetime- this doesn’t determine if you’re an artist. What matters is how creating makes you feel, if it fulfills a piece of your soul that nothing else can. This should come first. I’m forever grateful for the path I’m on. That I discovered this practice of painting which fulfills part of me nothing else can. Thanks so much to all of you for following along on my journey! Whoever you are, you gotta own it. It’s easier said than done- because it means taking a huge risk. Being who you are can mean going against the expectations of others. Even disappointing them. When I decided to pursue art, I definitely did not have support from everyone around me. But what I lost in the external world, I gained ten fold internally, because I had finally aligned with my purpose- my reason to exist. I’m a believer that the greatest disservice you can give to yourself and the world is to spend all your time doing something you don’t want to be doing... Meanwhile stifling your dreams, treating yourself and others with negativity because you aren’t living life how you’d like to be. If we can rise up to our individual greatest potential, I believe this is how we solve greater problems like climate change, consumerism and social injustice. It all begins with you. So don’t be afraid to pursue those things that make you feel alive. Such a wonderful Strawberry Festival weekend! I had so much fun seeing familiar faces, meeting new friends, and chatting up art in this lovely booth set up in my home town! Being a full time artist for the past two years, I’ve found myself feeling super isolated at times- there’s been weeks where I haven’t left the house or talked with anyone- I just sorta put my head down and worked. I do really enjoy my alone time and definitely need it for my creativity. But what I’ve realized is that I also love being around people and chatting in person. Also, I love to share my work in its life-sized, in person form- Not just on a tiny screen. That’s why I put together this 10x10ft display of my art. Everything came together so well and I can’t wait to do more events like this down the road! I am amazed with the amount of positive feedback from this weekend! The storm clouds decided to move away by the time I finished this painting at Semiahmoo beach. I promise they were there before! What an exhilarating experience to paint outside in God’s creation.
