My collaboration with @thekeikidept is adding on a couple more Hawaiian deities for the Keiki. Leilani and I discussed doing Poliahu a little while back, and it happened to coincide with a very important and powerful moment for Mauna Kea and for Hawaiian culture. I’ve done Hawaiian gods and deities before and I think I do these type of illustrations because of my love affair with storytelling and cultural history. To me, doing these are a fun way to introduce our children to the stories of their culture and others cultures. When we arm our children with a knowledge of where they come from, we are instilling in them a confidence in who they are. And when we give our children the tools to be confident in who they are, they grow up to be the leaders of our communities. So with these, and other tools for storytelling, take a minute and share a few stories with your Keiki. . . Here is my cute version of Poliahu...well, 4 variations of her.
