I did it! I’m on the other side. It’s been a rough few days. I anticipated the pain, but obviously very different when in it. One thing that I did not anticipate was the amount of anxiety I would feel. A holistic nurse came to see me today and changed the course of my recovery. She explained to me that my anxiety was normal (it didn’t feel normal - it was scary!). My body had undergone a trauma and was in fight or flight mode. She taught me some breathing exercises and this is how I spent the majority of my day today. Face mask, relaxation playlist, and breathing exercises. I have to continuously remind myself that this is a marathon not a sprint. There are no words to express my deep gratitude to everyone who reached out! Thank you from bottom of my heart. Thank you to my plastic surgeon Dr Lerman and his team. Thank you to my husband who was here by my side throughout the day, my sister who was here until I drifted off at night and my parents and in-laws for taking care of our babies. Sitting waiting for my meeting with a member of the breast clinic team at Barnet Hospital and it feels like the time is standing still. No matter how many meetings or scans I have had, I can’t seem to shake the nervous feeling and butterflies in my stomach. I need to remind myself of why I am here and that this is MY choice. I have the opportunity to reduce my risk of breast cancer rather than wait to treat it and I am forever grateful to have been given the choice that many others didn’t have.

My athletic life is divided into 2 distinct categories: pre-mastectomy and post-mastectomy. Post-mastectomy Kristin is an entirely different athlete, and not the way I thought I would be. . A lot of women are told they can never lift again. A lot of women have severely decreased range of motion or chronic pain. (I won’t pretend I don’t have pain, I do, but I don’t see it as a problem). I went into my surgeries knowing I might not ever lift again. I sold my Pendley competition kilo plates to help pay my outrageous insurance deductible because I didn’t want to see them again in case I couldn’t lift. . During my recovery I had insane amounts of regret. Not because I didn’t live up to some level of talent I had, I’m not that talented. But because I knew in my heart that I had let my mind and fear hold me back from being as good as I could be. . It’s been 732 days since my final surgery and 712 days since I stepped back in the gym a new person. There was a LOT I was unable to do, but unlike the past, I only focused on what I COULD do. I had @astoldbymary and @jarradholcombe set up my bar in a rack and load weights on it bc I wasn’t allowed to lift over 5lbs with my arms, but that wasn’t going to keep me from squatting. . Before my surgeries I was doing push-ups with 25lbs on my back and thought that was “good enough.” Today, 712 days later I did them with 45lbs on my back and am hungry for more, nothing is ever “good enough” for me since I have allowed myself to work without limits. . Today’s post isn’t a pretty outfit shot or a fun adventure but it’s a photo of strength! I’m officially a previvor although yesterday was not easy, I made it through and it can only get better from here. Thank you so much to everyone who has sent their love and support - it really helped me keep my head up through the pain. I wish running still felt like this☝ But right now, it feels REALLY hard. That’s why, together with @nyrr, we are forming a group for women who have had a mastectomy (or even thinking about it) and/or chemo/radiation. Going through these things alone is tough enough and you don’t have to. Come and meet fellow runners at all stages of their journey.
