This wasn't what I intended to post today (and actually I didn't even plan this activity at all ) but I HAD to share! This impromptu and SIMPLE activity kept my boys busy and learning for a really long time yesterday . . My 4 year old was home from school for the fourth day in a row on Friday and in that awkward too-sick-for-school-but-getting-bored-at-home phase. After running a couple of errands I took the little ones to the thrift store and said they could each pick out a toy. We came home with a dinosaur, a remote toy, and a bag full of resources that included foam magnetic letters and numbers, word family flash cards and animal sponges . . At home, I took out the letters and flashcards and paired them with a cake pan and a small loaf pan. We've done the magnetic letters on a baking sheet before, and I'm not sure if the 3D element changed things or if they were just really in the mood for this, but they LOVED it! The 17 month old really enjoyed sticking the letters on, and the 4 year old and I used the flashcards (and the dinosaur... swipe for more photos) to spell words! Some of his letters were upside down/backwards and some words were spelled phonetically, and THAT'S OKAY! He was spelling and learning and loving every minute of it! I love rhyming books. It is really hard to get them right, you know. But when you get a great picture book with a great rhyme, well, you've got my attention. Oh, and nevermind the fact that it happens to be about an awesome woman in history! WIN-WIN. ❤ So to give you an idea of how wonderful this book is, here is the opening line: "If there's something you want, but it seems out of reach, / here's a story for you - great truth it will teach. / When you focus your mind. you'll SUCCEED through and through, / like one bold ENGINEER by the name MONTAGUE. - Guys. I. LOVE. IT. I could read that page over and over, but of course it only gets better and better. This gem tells little readers all about the amazing Raye Montague, once a little girl inspired by a tour on a submarine, who grew up to become a talented and respected engineer for the Navy. Oh, but was it easy? You know it wasn't. She was black and a woman - a double whammy. But eventually, with talent and hard work (and a little luck), Raye showed everyone what she could do. This is SO FULL OF GIRL POWER I can hardly stand it. It is a favorite and will be for a long time.
