Celebrated #FleetWeekNYC yesterday with my family. I wore a silk vintage scarf reworked into a top. It was a quick alteration to add ties at the neck and back. This print was just way too pretty to be folded up into a scarf. I wanted to showcase the design and colors. I got it at the @thevintageshow for $3
This is the question I recently asked myself after an hour spent on Pinterest pinning, what seemed like, the same girl, the same body, the same ideal over and over again. It’s the question that led me to write my latest blog. It’s the question that has given me new awareness not only as a consumer but also as a maker of fashion. You can read the entire blog in the bio but I’ll leave you a little snippet below: ⠀⠀
“...Let me tell you, I’ve never really felt as inadequate as I do when I scroll Pinterest. We all know the Pinterest girl, she has long, curled balayage extensions, clear skin, a bright white, symmetrical smile, the tiniest waist and somehow the biggest boobs (if this is you, CONGRATS!). It’s not me. Honestly, it never will be, my frame is different. Not worse, which has taken me a long time to understand and still have to remind myself. Not worse, just different!
⠀⠀
As I scrolled through style inspo, I noticed the pins that caught my eye weren’t because of the clothing being worn it was because of the body wearing it. You’re probably thinking, “ummm… duh Sarah. That’s like, a model’s job. To have the body that makes you want to wear what she has.” I agree, admittedly this is a late, obvious revelation to have however, as a maker of clothing it feels more stark. It led me to the question, “do I like this look or just the body wearing it? That question gave me pause but, has ultimately reinvigorated my passion and sense of responsibility for representation in neo....” Read more in the bio link.
Pretty is powerful.
The other day, I told my boyf, "you know what?... I've felt pretty recently". Which, for me, was a huge moment of growth to recognize and celebrate.
"Pretty" is what I grew up longing for others to call and consider me. It's what I felt like everyone else had and I didn't. I spent years in a consistent state of striving for others' approval and changed myself to be whatever "pretty" people wanted (I have a whole blog to share on the matter but that’s most certainly for another day). But now, pretty is powerful because it's what I get to call and feel about myself without permission, admission or prompting.
I don't believe the phrase "pretty is powerful" is a hard and fast truth because I don't believe looks are our greatest contribution to the world. They're just not! We need to remember that! I do believe, however, that the real power is in the permission and acknowledgement we give ourselves to be enough. Because we are, in fact, nothing less than enough. .

I took these before pictures on Feb 17...it’s now March 11. That means it took me about 3 weeks to do 4 pieces. I’m happy with this progress cuz there was a time when I wasn’t doing shit and just sitting on my creativity. (I wasn’t being lazy though, I was figuring out motherhood.) These colors are just so springy and fun so I had to buy this set and the fabric is so lightweight...they almost feel like pajamas. I got 3 tops out of this with a skirt and very little scraps leftover. Which look is your favorite?!
It’s #transformationtuesday and this pattern was just too cute to pass up. It’s even more lively with an elastic collar, sleeves and a tie front. This baby is summer ready if you are! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
