Why did I go on Instagram? 1. To empower women in medicine: although most influencers in the medical Instagram world are women, this does not mirror society’s ideas on who looks like a doctor. Especially in surgery, I often get confused for the nurse, which is totally fine! But unless we educate that not all women are nurses and not all men are the doctors, we will never find equality. And I think we can all agree seeing all types of women out there putting on their white coat and working long days and coming home and taking care of their families/gymming/cooking/whatever is inspiring. 2. To humanize physicians: by showing the rigors of the process of becoming a physician and by showing our day to day, daily thoughts, worries, family stuff, finances, you name it. Everyone has their own problems and issues, their own high and lows. 3. Mentorship: man I wish I went through medical school with the tools we have now: Instagram, YouTube...; now social media is so largely accessible, and it now gives us the opportunity to share a wealth of knowledge. Many of you personally message me on tips for medical school or residency , studying, etc (which I love!)... it gives me an opportunity to be of some sort of mentorship even if we are miles away. 4. Creative space: I find it as a fun tool to make little educational Instagram stories and to share my favorite photographs taken while on vacation. Or... my outfits. 5. To provide motivation and inspiration on a long and often brutal journey: if I’ve made one person feel less alone in this often-isolating road, then I’ve accomplished what I came here for. The tragic death of Disney star #CameronBoyce has taken the world by storm. He reportedly died from complications of a seizure.
