Air pollution deaths 3rd highest in the Philippines. “Air pollution is a year-round perennial problem in the PH. A 2018 @WHO report found that the PH ranked 3rd in the world as having the most number of deaths due to air poll'n (after China & Mongolia). 1 in 4 deaths in the PH are attributed to air poll’n. When the size of particulate matter in the air is 2.5 micrometers (PM2.5) and below, it penetrates into a person’s respiratory & cardiovascular system leading to serious health problems such as pulmonary disease, lung cancer, pneumonia, heart disease & stroke. To put things in perspective, the safe level for PM2.5 is 50 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m3) of air. Data from air monitoring stations in 2017 showed alarming figures for air quality in several parts of Metro Manila such as Quezon City (369 µg/nm❗️), Taft Avenue, Manila (448 µg/nm❗️), Paranaque (433 µg/nm❗️) and Valenzuela (285 µg/nm❗️). These values ranged from 500-900% beyond the recommended safe level‼️ @UNICEF’s Air Pollution Report says that outdoor air poll’n is most common in low-income, urban areas & is caused by vehicle emissions, heavy use of fossil fuels, dust, & burning of waste. In the PH, air poll’n is a problem that cuts among demographics, affecting rich & poor people alike. “Air poll’n affects each & every one of us. We need stronger coordination & wider collaboration so we can once & for all solve our air poll’n problem,” said Env’t Sec. Roy Cimatu. The @DENRofficial’s Air Quality Management Bureau and the LTO are working together to track & apprehend smoke belchers. Smoke belchers are subject to fines, license suspensions or franchise cancellations. Nonetheless, the continued increase in the number of vehicles in the PH may pose challenges to maintaining healthy levels of air quality. Three changes occur inside the airways of the lungs in people with asthma: the first change is inflammation, or swelling, whereby the airway becomes inflamed and produce a thick #mucus. Inflammation then leads to constriction of the muscles around the airways, causing the airways to become narrow. This narrowing is also referred to as bronchospasm. The third change is increased sensitivity of the airways, causing the asthma patient to become overly sensitive to animal dander, pollen, cold air and tobacco #smoke, to name a few. This is not a typical post but I wanted to share with you all a little bit of this job I love. I get so many questions about what I do, how do I do it, do I love it etc. Let me tell you the reasons why I love my job. This little guy has been one of my patients. He was born premature at only 24 weeks and was supposed to be a twin brother but God had other plans. He has been through a wholeeee lot. His chances of survival were minute given he had so many complications. But this Angels desire for living was bigger than anything and the warrior of a momma he has fought diligently for him Day after day. Month after month and counting. He is now 8 months old and will finally get to go home soon. As I spoke with one of my coworkers today he asked me about him and I told him his progress and I could hear the cheering in the background in the NICU to hear the amazing news. Again, I show you that with love, hope, kindness, patience and compassion we can change the world. We can make a difference no matter how big or small. This is why I do it. To see the recovery and the improvement is so heartwarming and so rewarding. God is good all the time. We sometimes take soooo much for granted and complain about the dumbest things not realizing how good we have it. When there are people like baby who are simply fighting for their place on this earth. People connected to machines just like he was who are fighting for their lifeeeee a life you already hold and sometimes don’t appreciate. A life you don’t fight for or make the best of because you’re too busy dwelling and everything that doesn’t matter!!!!! . . You see, there are soooo many of you out there who have so much potential, so much talent, so much more to give, who have it sooooo good yet it’s so easy to take it for granted. There are people like this baby and his momma who would give anything to simply be home. To shower in their own house and sleep in their own bed. Embrace where you are at. Live your life to your fullest potential. Hold those nearest and dearest to you. If today was your last day on earth, what would you do or give for tomorrow?
