Midships on a King George V class battleship, possibly KGV herself. It is a great study in the different weaponry aboard. Visible are the 14" main guns of B turret, two of the twin QF 5.25" turrets, 1 x 4-barrelled 2lb pom-poms, 3 x 8-barrelled 2lb pom-poms, and 2 x twin Oerlikon 20 mm cannon mounts, and 2 x single 20mm mounts. I believe that this photo is taken during a very relaxed moment in 1945 as the crew are clearly in tropical whites and all four remaining KGV's had joined the British Pacific Fleet by this point in the conflict. Note the curious vents fitted to the portholes, presumably to help direct air through the ship in humid climates. Can anyone confirm this or advise different? --The sinking of the RMS Lusitania🇬🇧 (Part 2)-- ______________________________________________ The U-boat U-20, fire one torpedo, which struck Lusitania on the starboard bow, just beneath the wheelhouse. Moments later, a second explosion erupted from within Lusitania's hull generated by the explosion of transported ammunition, and the ship began to sunk much more rapidly, with a prominent list to starboard. Realizing that the ship had continued to advance forward, favoring flooding, Captain Turner ordered the whole back, but the pressure exerted on the aft turbines in those conditions caused a backflush that broke one of the steam pipes, suddenly uncovering a of the condensers on the crowded deck of passengers. After 4 minutes the entire electrical circuit of the ship broke off leaving anyone inside in the dark. The marconists continued to transmit thanks to the emergency generator which stopped working shortly thereafter. Meanwhile, the ship continued to proceed. After 13 minutes the ship was tilted on the right side of 25 degrees, with the porthole completely submerged and embarked at the rate of about 3 tons per minute. The strong lateral heel was added to the longitudinal one, making it impossible to lower the boats on the left side into the sea. The ship propelled the stern towards the sky, with the propellers out of the water and the bow submerged until it touched the seabed. As the hull began to descend horizontally, pivoting on the bow, the boiler no. 3 exploded destroying the third smokestack. Shortly thereafter, the stern was completely immersed. From the point where it had been torpedoed, the ship had traveled more than 3 km. The Lusitania sank completely just 18 minutes after the torpedo; of its 48 lifeboats only 6 reached Queenstown. The British Government deliberately putting Lusitania at risk, the ship was officially carrying among her cargo 750 tons of rifle/machine-gun ammunition, 1250 cases of shrapnel artillery shells with the explosive burster charges loaded but no fuses or propellant charges, and the artillery fuses for those shells stored separately. --The sinking of the RMS Lusitania🇬🇧 (Part 1)-- ______________________________________________ When Lusitania was built in 1906, her construction and operating expenses were subsidised by the British government, with the proviso that she could be converted into an armed merchant cruiser (AMC) if need be. The Admiralty contract required that all machinery be below the waterline, where it was considered to be better protected from gunfire, and the aft third of the ship below water was used to house the turbines, the steering motors and four 375-kilowatt steam driven turbo-generators. The central half contained four boiler rooms, a secret compartment was designed at the forward end of the ship for the purpose of carrying arms and ammunition. Coal bunkers were placed along the length of the ship outboard of the boiler rooms, with a large transverse bunker immediately in front of that most forward (number 1) boiler room. Apart from convenience ready for use, the coal was considered to provide added protection for the central spaces against attack. On 7 May 1915 Lusitania was nearing the end of her 202 nd crossing, bound for Liverpool from New York, and was scheduled to dock at the Prince's Landing Stage later that afternoon. The fog made it necessary to decrease speed by exposing the ship to the threat of submarines; aboard her were 1,266 passengers and a crew of 696, which combined totaled to 1,962 people. She was running parallel to the south coast of Ireland, and was roughly 11 miles off the Old Head of Kinsale when the liner crossed in front of U-20 at 14:10. The commanding officer of the U-boat, gave the order to fire one torpedo. #bigship #oceanliner #transatlanticliner #CunardLine #WW1 #GreatWar #RoyalNavy #ImperialGermanNavy #WorldWarOne #RoyalMailService #SteamShip #the_giants_of_the_sea

Via SFGate WASHINGTON (AP) — China's first domestically built aircraft carrier is likely to enter into service this year, marking another advance in Beijing's ability to project influence well beyond its shores, the Pentagon said Thursday in an updated assessment of Chinese military power. The report to Congress comes amid increased emphasis by the Pentagon on adjusting to what it sees as an emerging challenge from China not only in naval strength but also in cyber capabilities, space power and missile technologies. Last year the Pentagon declared strategic competition with China and Russia to be its top priority, shifting from a focus on fighting extremist groups and insurgencies that began with the invasion of Afghanistan after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Thursday's report mostly recapped a range of Chinese efforts to strengthen its military. "Over the coming decades, they are focused on realizing a powerful and prosperous China that is equipped with a 'world-class' military, securing China's status as a great power with the aim of emerging as the pre-eminent power in the Indo-Pacific region," it said. In predicting that China's first domestically built aircraft carrier will join the fleet this year, the report said the Chinese navy "continues to develop into a global force, gradually extending its operational reach beyond East Asia into a sustained ability to operate at increasingly longer ranges." The carrier began sea trials a year ago. The only aircraft carrier in China's current naval fleet, the Liaoning, was bought as a mostly empty hull from Ukraine in 2002 and commissioned in 2012. China says aircraft carriers are needed to protect its coastline and trade routes. Like, tag your friends and tell us what you think in the comments! 🚢⚓️ @usnavy @americasnavy #chinesenavy

This wonderful piece of history is the most recent donation to the collection of the museum. It has been given to us by Mr. István Keller, an Hungarian narional that has been living in Austria for some decades now. His grandfather, that had served in the Austrian-Hungarian Navy in World War I, built and sold ship models to earn some extra money for his family. Most of the few models that were kept in family possession got lost during World War II. Mr. Keller still had this one and wanted to have it preserved for posterity. It is now in the caring hands of our conservation/restauration experts and will most certainly find its way to our exhibition soon. We would like to thank Mr. Keller for this generous gift! The ship represented here is the British battlecruiser HMS Renown. She was ordered at the end of 1914. Her production was stopped at first and then continued with a new design. Even if she was commissioned in September 1916, she saw no action during World War I. The ship was overhauled twice between the wars and was then active in a variety of theatres during World War II. She participated in the search for the Admiral Graf Spee (1939), the Norwegian Campaign (1940), the Battle of Cape Spartivento (1940),the hunt for the Bismarck (1941), Operation Torch (the Anglo-American invasion of French North Africa, 1943). In 1944, she was assigned to the Eastern Fleet and fought the Japanese in the Indian Ocean. In 1945, she served in the British Home Fleet until the end of the war. She was then placed in the reserve until 1948. In that year, she was finally sold for scrap. We will make sure to inform you as soon as the model has made it in the exhibition.

Via Telegraph A decision to scrap the "she" title for boats will "insult generations of sailors", the former head of the Navy says. Admiral Lord Alan West, former First Sea Lord, has spoken out after a British maritime museum began referring to ships it exhibits as "it" in a bid to appear gender neutral. In a rare move, BBC Radio 4's today programme took a call from a listener, Lord West, after he was so incensed by the news that he rang the show. He said that the move is "stark staring bonkers" and "political correctness gone mad", adding: "It's a sort of insult to generations of sailors, the ships are seen almost as a mother to preserve us from the dangers of the sea and also from the violence of the enemy. To change it in this trite fashion is just absolutely stupid. "We've done it for centuries as that's how we refer to them, we have to be very careful with little tiny pressure groups that make people change things. It's a very dangerous road we are going down. "I don't think it's dated at all...sometimes things that are dated are there for very good reasons and I am very proud of some of those facts."
