“Some days it just flows and I feel like I’m born to do this, other days it feels like I’m trudging through hell. Every day I make the choice to show up and see what I’ve got, and to try and be better.
My advice: keep showing up.” - @des_linden. Always a favorite quote from Des. Part one of my Friday run done this morning and spent telling myself to just #KeepShowingUp. : @arossstories #ultratraining #chicago #runchi #marathonerdale #runhappy
INJURY PREVENTION
.
.
There are a couple benefits to being someone who was formerly overweight: 1. your body learns to use fat stores very well (a gift in the ultra) and 2. that your body is well trained in carrying stress. As such, I haven’t had a lot of injuries despite doing high miles thankfully. I strength train and stretch religiously as it is always my fear..... nevertheless recently I was spooked a couple weeks ago. After a 5 mile marathon pace work out I felt it pretty bad in my IT band side of knee area. It was tough to put any pressure on that side during runs, and I started limping kind of. .
.
.
I went through the past three weeks modifying my schedule and trying to figure out what to do. I could run through it, but I was so scared I was going to hurt myself long term that I would get anxiety on my runs. I’m such a weirdo I know. To play it safe I went to a sports med doctor today.

The good news! Despite all the miles My body is doing well. I have a bit of muscular damage just from the intensity of the training, but doc says I’m ok to resume regular running. I cannot tell you how relieved I am. My doc reminded me that our bodies weren’t meant to do what we do! Ha! .

FRIENDLY REMINDER always, always, always remember to stretch after a run- the real last mile! And strength train 2x a week on your hard days. Do your lifting AFTER your run. .
Remember the 4 areas to train & stretch 1️⃣Hammies 2️⃣Glutes 3️⃣Quads 4️⃣Hips. .
.
If you ever suspect injury - don’t wait. Go get it checked out!! .

I would describe running as many things. Exciting, challenging, rewarding ... but EASY? I wouldn't say running is ever easy for me.
I have a friend who just started running. She texts me asking questions and recommendations on how far to go. Whenever someone starts running, I always tell them to run/walk. That's how I started. I'd run to "this light post" or run to "the end of the block." Eventually, I got to where I didn't need the walk anymore. "When will it be easy?" I think I burst her bubble. I'm curious, is running easy for you? It's not easy for me, but it's WORTH IT!

Did I feel a little ridiculous starting my run at 7:30 p.m. in 95 degree heat tonight after being on my feet for 6 hours working the expo? Yes. But I ran/walked as planned and tried to make the most of it. Always feel better after time spent outside - no matter the weather.
