17 years ago this month my darling dad passed away. I spent ten of those years as a very unhappy girl.⠀ ⠀ Some of the teachers at school used to call me “smiley” - they didn’t realise that smiling was my way of pushing down the sadness.⠀ ⠀ But it got to a point where I couldn’t keep going like I was.⠀ ⠀ I moved back home with my mum, and started working on myself. I left myself feel the grief for the first time and slowly shed the heavy cloak of sadness numbing me from the world.⠀ ⠀ I started getting to know myself again as “me” and after so many years of spending my energy pushing down the grief, I began feeling more, the world became more colourful - and my resolve got stronger: ⠀ ⠀ I’m not here to settle. ⠀ ⠀ I’m not OK with “OK”.⠀ ⠀ Quitting my job?⠀ ⠀ I can always get another one. ⠀ ⠀ Launching a new business?⠀ ⠀ I don’t have to have it all figured out at get-go.⠀ ⠀ I want to know that I’m giving myself the best shot. To keep thinking bigger, however scary, silly or impossible it seems, and then keep working on it. For me.⠀ ⠀ And now, when I meet people who might seem a little crazy to others, who are running their own race, trying, failing, and trying some more, I know I’ve found my people. ⠀ ⠀ It doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else. You know you couldn’t feel happy if you didn’t give this a go. Keep going, you’re doing amazing - I know that’s what my Dad would say.

Do you want to know the thing that has positively impacted my life more than anything else? It’s not work ethic or connections or even self-care. In fact, I think it may surprise you. The thing that has impacted my life for the better in every single way is my ability to admit to myself and to others that I am sometimes the worst. I don’t mean that I shame myself or live in guilt. I mean that I stare at my shittiest traits and I hold them lightly. I own that I bring things to the table that aren’t always helpful and I let that impact the way I move through the world. That awareness brings me the clarity I need to know how to grow my business, create healthy relationships, take care of my body and my heart, and create from a place of inspiration. Knowing where I fall short allows me to create a support plan. It allows others to feel comfortable and safe in my presence. It actually helps me to do less harm to people who enter my path. However, the only reason that this works is because I started with a deep well of self-love. I learned to love myself no matter what. I learned that unconditional acceptance of who I am came from the ability to celebrate my strengths and also accept my weaknesses. This process, it has changed everything for me. We are all worthy of full self-acceptance and it’s my belief that FULL self-acceptance starts with being honest. It’s not honest to pretend like we don’t have flaws. It’s also not honest to pretend like we don’t have strengths. True, honest, deep self-love requires our ability to hold both. My dear, you are so worthy of it all. I’m amazed by the way we portray fatness in media. I remain shocked every time that I see bodies used as a punch line or fatness equated to laziness. I’m amazed because we’ve proven at this point that it isn’t an accurate representation of real fat bodied people. There’s enough research now to prove that our bodies aren’t an accurate showing of health. ( although even if they were - why would me mock someone for their health or lack thereof? ) I’m amazed also because we are so intensely demanding of a better showing from media in general. Yet it’s still more common that we see the negative representation of thicker bodies than a positive or even a neutral. It’s not like me to rant on here. But I’m finding myself having to un-brainwash our kid from the mark that media makes on his mind when it comes to what fat people are or aren’t. I’m now hyper aware of what messages he’s being fed. The messages WE are being fed. For those who need a reminder. This body - the one you see up there. It’s happy. It belongs to one of the hardest workers I know. It is NOT by any stretch of the imagination lazy or even excessive. This body moves and shakes and sweats daily. This body has practiced yoga nearly everyday for the last 7 years. This body loves vegetables more than almost anything. This body has backpacked Europe, traveled the 48 continental states, built over 6 businesses, modeled both nude and clothed, climbed mountains and hitchhiked in Central America. This body has LIVED. This body is thrilled to be alive. This body is Happy. Loved. Successful. Healthy! Keep showing up. Keep loving everything you are. Keep demanding better from media. We aren’t done here.
