Dyeing on linen with madder In preparation for our New Year collection! They will be ready by next week! Last minute shoppers be ready or just treat yourself in the new year. Dyeing on linen is a long process as linen is a cellulose fibre. 1. We first pre treat the fabric with tannins by simmering the fabric in a extract of myrobalan powder. 2. The linen is then mordanted with aluminium acetate. 3. While the above is going on, the madder powder which has been soaked overnight is simmered to no more than 70 degrees for an hour. The process is repeated again and again in a fresh bath untill the powder is exhausted. Seiving out the powder and keeping the bath each time. 4. When mordanting is done. The linen goes into the madder baths and it is simmered to no more than 70 degrees for an hour. 5. At this point you can choose to leave the linen in the dye pot overnight or mordant with alumium acetate and put it in the madder bath again untill you get your desired colour. *Why 70 degrees?
