The @shawnmendes content isn’t over just yet...I’m talking about meeting the incredible man himself and what the VIP experience was like for me as a blind person in my new blog post over at lifeofablindgirl.com I’m also highlighting the issues that we faced when purchasing the VIP packages, it took 6 weeks for us to get them because of our disability when other fans purchased them in a matter of minutes. I’m hoping to raise awareness of this issue and highlight the fact that things really need to change for disabled fans wanting to purchase VIP/meet and greet packages for their favourite bands/artists. Music is a lifeline for many of us, and we want the opportunity to thank the band or artist that has helped us through some of the hardest times, just like non-disabled fans. It was worth all the frustration, stress and upset though! It’s definitely the longest post that I’ve ever published but it’s one of my favourites. I loved the Manchester show so much that I wish I was going to one of the London shows this week, if it wasn’t for my vision impairment I would have 100% been there supporting my favourite person! I’m beyond grateful for the experience that I’ve had already but there’s no feeling like being at a concert seeing one of your favourite artists perform and light up the stage with their passion and energy. I can’t put into words how much I miss the feeling of being at a concert, in my own little bubble, having the time of my life! This is my symbol cane. I use it in crowded places, especially if I am travelling alone. A symbol cane is a shorter white stick which does not stretch down to the floor and does not have a ball on the end. It is not to guide me in any way, but is, as the names suggests, a symbol to others that I am visually impaired. When travelling alone in Central London I find it invaluable: people give me time and patience. I can walk right up close to a sign to look at it without getting tutted at, I can take my time getting on escalators, and I can ask TfL staff members or members of the public for the destination of the train without having to explain why I need to ask. What does a visually impaired person look like? This week I was interrogated by a neighbour in the street on being visually impaired and how IF I were visually impaired, as I say I am, then I wouldn’t be riding a [kick] scooter. And that if I really do have #MacularDegeneration then I must not care about myself or others when riding my scooter. North beach, Iona. They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Which is probably why I chose to sign up to @instagram five years ago. I am drawn to images more than I am articles, tweets and blogs. And I am no good at writing captions so I try to let my photographs tell a story on their own. I came across a post from @RNIB about the Alternative Text option on Instagram that I wasn't aware of. It made me realise how easy this is for me compared to people with #VisualImpairment who may not have that ease of access. Instagram will now automatically create text for your photos or you can do it yourself so those with any kind of #sightloss can hear what's in an image as they scroll through their feed. Obviously I can't be the judge of whether this will make a difference but if it is a step towards more equal access for everyone then surely that's a good thing? So...I'm going to try harder to make my photos accessible - blind people use Instagram too #RNIBSeeDifferently
