I have never been organic fruit picking before. Not have I ever been hunting. But here’s something I was thinking about during a casual walk around the supermarket. Do we really stop to think where all that food comes from? How did it get here? All packaged and cleaned and ready to eat? Food is something we consume every day of our lives, yet we are so disconnected from it. I never realised how much time, energy and labour it takes to just pick apples out, or sort good strawberries from bad ones or extract honey from a honeycomb. Suddenly, when I was exposed to that environment, my perception of food changed. There was a different joy of eating something picked out straight from a tree, there was a different value attached to that food. It’s because I picked one out myself, for the first time I felt like I earned that fruit. I think because many people don’t see the process of food and we just see hundreds and hundreds of packed boxes in markets, we majorly take it for granted. We don’t really value the food we eat or appreciate everything that went into that food being on my plate. So it’s easy to just throw it away if you’re full or the flavour is a bit off and there is so so so much food wastage. Can you imagine what it would be like, for that one farmer who spent hours and hours, out in the fields, in the heat or extreme cold, watch some ignorant people just trash their food in a split second? Could it be more heartbreaking? What do you think? During the 1990s, he attracted much attention with his One Minute Sculptures, which encouraged viewers to interact with everyday objects such as chairs, clothes, or detergents in absurd positions, thereby becoming part of the performative-sculptural installation themselves.
