(Part 1/2) Friends! I’m only sharing this because I honestly think it might save lives. PLEASE read + share or tag your friends. THIS MIGHT SERIOUSLY SAVE YOUR LIFE. • A few weeks ago, I was diagnosed with Melanoma—the deadliest form of skin cancer. Here are things I’ve learned in the past few weeks: Melanoma one of the biggest cancer killers of people under the age of 30. Rates have doubled in the last decade. When caught in stage 1, Melanoma has a 97% survival rate. But when caught in stage 4, the chances of surviving drop to 10%. Melanoma is aggressive, and the difference between stage 1 and stage 4 can LITERALLY be a matter of millimeters. It’s not about how big the freckle or mole is on your skin (mine was TINY- I’ll share in my stories) but the depth of the tumor underneath. So even a small freckle can be really bad news. Both women AND men can get it (men often get it on their scalp). You’re at an increased risk for getting Melanoma if you have EVER gotten a sunburn (even as a kid) and you’re also at an increased risk if you’ve EVER used a tanning bed (EVEN IF you have only used a tanning bed one or two times, your risk of getting Melanoma increases by 59%). Melanoma affects people with all skin tones. • PLEASE hear me: EVEN if you have been careful with your skin in recent years (like me!), you are still at risk for developing this deadly cancer. Every hour, one person in the US dies from this type of cancer. The ONLY way to detect Melanoma is with regular skin checks. This is my PSA. Get your skin checked every year. Even if you wear tons of sunscreen (like I do) and wear hats and sunglasses. I would have never seen this spot that wasn’t there last year but randomly showed up. The biopsy came back and it had to be removed. I am grateful to my dermatologist @drsoniabatra for noticing. I’m grateful to myself for being diligent. Stay on it friends. Stay healthy. Stay in the know about you. Love yourself enough to take care of you. Who knows. (Part 2/2) Honestly, God has been so faithful to me throughout this experience and we caught this cancer very early in stage 1. Even still, I needed to undergo surgery that removed an area of tissue in my left shin, and my cancer had an elevated mitotic rate (meaning it was slightly more aggressive) so there was a lot of waiting on biopsies and tests to see if we also needed to take a lymph node to make sure it hadn’t spread to other places in my body. Yesterday we got the results back and THANKFULLY, I am cancer free (praise Jesus!) but there was a time when I really wasn’t sure if my sweet baby would have his mama around. I was nursing Calvin the day my doctor called and said she had bad news, and the fear I had in that moment was indescribable. My husband and I spent a lot of time in prayer. It was terrifying. • Here’s the thing: I don’t like being the victim of anything and normally I wouldn’t share this type of thing, but I don’t want any other person to go through this… ‍♀️ So I’m sharing this to encourage you to get skin checks. • There are no formal recommendations for when to get skin checks (like there are with mammograms) but my Surgical Oncologist has seen girls with Melanoma as young as 18 (!) and I personally know 4 young mamas who were diagnosed with Melanoma after giving birth. • All this to say, GET YOUR SKIN CHECKED! Get it checked annually, or twice a year to be safe. Get it checked if you’re 18 or older. Get it checked if you’ve EVER used a tanning bed—even if you don’t anymore! (Like me!) Get it checked if you’ve EVER had a sunburn, or if you’ve EVER been in the sun without sunscreen. Get it checked if you have any abnormal moles, but ALSO get checked if your moles look fine (mine did not “look” like cancer). Get it checked if you have a husband you want to be around for or a baby you want to watch grow up. • Skin checks take five minutes from a Dermatologist or anyone certified to give them (some primary doctors). PLEASE tag your friends to remind them to get checked, or send this to them. Hey friends! May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month and I’m sharing a personal life update because I think it could honestly help save lives! I went in to get a suspicious looking mole removed a few weeks ago and then last week got the call that I have melanoma skin cancer, which is the deadliest of skin cancers. Today I had a surgery to go deeper into my skin to try to get clear margins and to see if it has spread, so we’re praying for some good results! My surgery went well, but I’m not in the clear yet and I’ll be off my feet for a couple weeks. I didn’t even think that skin cancer was something I would have to worry about until I was “old”, but over these last couple of weeks I’ve learned that it’s actually one of the most common cancers in young adults. Our skin is our largest organ, we need to take extra good care of it! Always use sunscreen, literally everyday, even if you don’t think you’re going to be in the sun at all. Get regular skin checks by your doctor or dermatologist, especially if you have a family history of skin cancer. If you see a suspicious mole, or even freckle, it’s better to be safe than sorry and get it checked out! I’m lucky that I was able to catch this when I did, and I’m also lucky to have such a cute and supportive husband by my side through all of this. ❤️
