I learned about D.C.’s National Museum of the American Indian for four years during college, and I finally got to visit it in person! Everything about this museum was so carefully chosen and designed to represent the indigenous groups in the Americas. The exterior was modeled after southwestern pueblo housing, the boulders around the building were imported from Hawaii and ceremonially blessed, the interior lobby and rotunda were based on traditional hogans and naturally guided visitors in the appropriate direction you’re supposed to enter a hogan. We got to see a Cree dancer demonstrate the hoop dance, see Native art inspired by Standing Rock, view the actual treaties between indigenous tribes and the U.S. (the latter of whom broke every single one) and eat fry bread tacos. This is one of my new favorite places to be, and I walked away incredibly grateful that I’ve been lucky and privileged enough to learn so much about Native cultures and make all of it such a huge part of my life. If you’re in D.C., go to this museum right away. Special shoutout to @byellowtail for the “protect her” shirt I wore to the museum seen in the last picture.

Hall Sapphire and Diamond Necklace @smithsoniannmnh .
This exquisite necklace features 36 matched sapphires from Sri Lanka totaling 195 carats. Their deep sky-blue color contrasts brilliantly with a sparkling sea of 435 diamonds weighing 84 carats. @harrywinston designed the necklace for the donor Evelyn Annenberg Hall, who donated in 1979.

“Look at me, I’m as helpless as a kitten up a tree, and I feel like I’m clinging to a cloud, I can’t understand, I get misty just holding your hand.”

In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month I want to recognize one of my favorite Jazz artists, Sarah Vaughan. I LOVE her version of the song “Misty”. #courtneyb #sarahvaughan #jazz #smithsonianmuseum
“Art can flourish in any hovel. It flourishes in a dank little three room walk up on the fringe of the Village. Joe Gatto lives there with his 87 year old mother… He uses the back of a chair for his easel and an overturned plate for his palette. He has little learning and less knowledge, but he can paint silent poetry with the natural gift that the sun colors a flower.” – Sidney Fields, Columnist, The New York Daily Mirror, June 11, 1942.

Victor Joseph Gatto (1893-1965), known as Joe Gatto, was poor for most of his life, with limited education. After a series of low paying, disparate jobs (steamfitter’s helper, featherweight boxer), Gatto’s life changed in 1938 at the age of 45 when he walked past an outdoor art show in NYC’s Greenwich Village. Learning that artists could make hundreds of dollars with the sale of one of their pictures, Gatto immediately declared himself a painter and got to work.
