I learned about D.C.’s National Museum of the American Indian for four years during college, and I finally got to visit it in person! Everything about this museum was so carefully chosen and designed to represent the indigenous groups in the Americas. The exterior was modeled after southwestern pueblo housing, the boulders around the building were imported from Hawaii and ceremonially blessed, the interior lobby and rotunda were based on traditional hogans and naturally guided visitors in the appropriate direction you’re supposed to enter a hogan. We got to see a Cree dancer demonstrate the hoop dance, see Native art inspired by Standing Rock, view the actual treaties between indigenous tribes and the U.S. (the latter of whom broke every single one) and eat fry bread tacos. This is one of my new favorite places to be, and I walked away incredibly grateful that I’ve been lucky and privileged enough to learn so much about Native cultures and make all of it such a huge part of my life. Hall Sapphire and Diamond Necklace @smithsoniannmnh . This exquisite necklace features 36 matched sapphires from Sri Lanka totaling 195 carats. After a series of low paying, disparate jobs (steamfitter’s helper, featherweight boxer), Gatto’s life changed in 1938 at the age of 45 when he walked past an outdoor art show in NYC’s Greenwich Village.
