Carl Spitzweg (February 5, 1808 – September 23, 1885) was a German romanticist painter, especially of genre subjects. He is considered to be one of the most important artists of the Biedermeier era. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>I love the painting of the man in the library, it gives me chills#carlspitzweg#spitzweg#instaart#instaartsy#paint#painter#painting#romanticism#love#beautiful#wow#german#germany#vintage#ancient#art#artsy#old#oldbutgold#50s#60s#70s#80s#90s#lfl#ff#cfc#c4c#l4l

"The Bookworm" / Der Bücherwurm (1857)  oil on canvas 49.5 cm × 26.8 cm Museum Georg Schäfer, Schweinfurt, Germany . Carl Spitzweg was a German painter who is recognized as the most representative of the Biedermeier (early Victorian) artists in Germany. . Spitzweg was born in 1808, in Unterpfaffenhofen, Bavaria. He was the second of three children born to a family of a wealthy merchant. Trained in pharmacy at the University of Munich, Spitzweg was a pharmacist and newspaper illustrator before becoming a painter in 1833. Because of a drawn-out illness, he gave up his career and dedicated himself to painting. Spitzweg was self-taught as an artist, starting out by copying the works of Flemish masters. He never married and lived a monastic life. . Spitzweg visited European art centres in Prague, Venice, Paris, London, and Belgium, studying the works of various artists and refining his technique and style. His later paintings and drawings are often humorous genre works. Many of his paintings depict sharply characterized eccentrics, for example, "The Bookworm" and "The Hypochondriac." Though widely travelled in Europe, he was provincial in his choice of subjects; tenderly, humorously, but with firm control of light, shadow, composition, and detail, he portrayed small-town misfits, street musicians, postmen, night watchmen, and lovers bidding farewell. . He could be described as a minor master as he was not widely known outside Germany, yet his humorous works deserve proper recognition for the quality of the painting and the finesse of his observations. Spitzweg's works occupy a prominent place in the national art collection in Germany. He is regarded as the German Norman Rockwell because of his ability to capture German life. Spitzweg’s work was sought after by Adolf Hitler, who had a Spitzweg painting in his apartment in 1929. . . . #karlspitzweg #spitzweg #painter #germanartist #romanticism #biedermeier #fineart #pharmacist #humor #genrepainting #art #kunst #hitler #Künstler #munich #germany #sammeln #kunstsammlung #Sammlung #europeanart #arthamburg #pictureoftheday #vsco #vscocam #vscobest #vscoart #vscous #vsconyc #artcologne

The Bookworm (1850) – Carl Spitzweg Oil on canvas Spitzweg was a painter closely related to the Austrian movement, Biedermeier. The movement projected life in a realistic way with a touch of peace and tranquility, I feel that every painting is telling a harmonious story. In the Belvedere museum we can find most of the works of this movement. I really love this picture the Spitzweg, do you like it?.// Spitzweg fue uno de los pintores más relacionados al movimiento austriaco, Biedermeier. El movimiento buscaba proyectar la vida de manera realista y con un toque de paz y tranquilidad, como si estuviera contando una anécdota a través de la pintura. Today we honor an artist of the Biedermeier era, Carl Spitzweg! Carl Spitzweg was a visual-artist born on this day in 1808, in Unterpfaffenhofen (Germany). Spitzweg did not intend to become an artist. He came from a wealthy family and studied pharmacy at the University of Munich. It was at the University that he took the calling of an artist. Primarily self-taught, Spitzweg began making copies of other great works, particularly the great Flemish artists. Only after receiving a large inheritance, was he able to completely devote himself to his new passion. Spitzweg soon began visiting great artistic centers to study up-close the styles and techniques of famous works. These trip helped hone his artistic skills and greatly benefited his overall works. Many of the themes Spitzweg used in his art were everyday scenes of life, often humoristic or unconventional. Considered one of the most important figures during the Biedermeier era, Spitzweg’s art was very appealing and popular. The Biedermeier era in the Arts is a transitional movement between Neoclassicism and Romanticism that focused on capturing the growing middle-class‘s interest in the arts. Carl Spitzweg died on September 23, 1885 in Munich (Germany).
