Major Travelers rollin’ on the river in Thailand

Hashtags sur le sujet #THAILANDHOTELS

Betcha can't guess where this is! (Actually I bet you can, as I've tagged it). It's the famous Railay Beach in Thailand. Thailand sees nearly 40 million tourists a year, and Railay Beach is one of it's most popular spots. I, like many tourists, love Thailand. Everything you read about it is true - the food is amazing, the people are lovely, there are thousands of temples and there's beautiful nature. Railay Beach is one of the many amazing beaches that had made Thai tourism legendary. I'm not so much addressing Railay here, but more Ao Nang, where many people who visit Railay stay. I booked a hotel in Ao Nang without reading much into it - and wow it was eye opening. Ao Nang has been absolutely overrun by tourism. Apart from the fact that there is still Thai food available, it doesn't feel like Thailand at all. And honestly, it made me feel really uncomfortable. I know tourism provides jobs for locals, but does it just push prices up for them when they're living their day to day lives? And how do they feel about how much their town has changed culturally to accommodate tourists? I don't know all the answers - I'd love to hear some of your thoughts to this in the comments. I know I won't be returning to Ao Nang, but I would like to visit some other popular spots in Thailand - even some around Krabi that I missed this time. I think the most important things we can do as travellers is to be kind and respectful always and interested in talking to local people about their culture and customs. That way we keep cultures alive and learn new things. It is harder to seek out local experiences in the more touristy places, but just a conversation with someone at a hotel can go a long way! And using local businesses is so important! It's hard sometimes to know which are local and which are foreign owned. But generally, if it's a multi-national chain, it'll be foreign owned So what do you think? When is tourism too much - and when does it start negatively affecting the place? Can we still visit these places as responsible travellers, or should we focus elsewhere?

If you told me 3 years ago that my backpacker style would now involve me staying at 4* hotels with a pool and spa, I wouldn't have believed you . In all honesty, I absolutely love budget travel, but sometimes a slice of luxury is needed. I'm covering a lot of miles, and taking a lot of buses and trains, so I ain't mad about treating myself every now and again! I am trying to stay in a private room when possible, as I find it really hard to sleep in dorms - and when you're getting night buses across the world sleeping in a bed needs to be taken full advantage of! This hotel was a little more luxury than normal, but it was welcomed with open arms. And now I'm completely refreshed for my race to Cambodia. May the journey continue! #krabi #krabithailand #aonang #thailandhotels #affordableluxury
