I have been thinking so much about how I would post this or when I would post this but no words could possibly quite explain it. I have spent 4 years in this room. 4 years. That’s a long time. The school year has come to an end but it’s different this time. This year I cleaned and packed up this room of mine for the last time. Just over a month ago I found that my full time position as theatre and TV is being eliminated. I was heartbroken. Once I released that heartbreak I almost felt free. Free to consider a million possibilities. I had made this little room a second home for myself and the girls that spent their time in it. The face of a woman who is struggling with the concept of “balance” when we are two weeks from opening, and there are 13 one-act plays in rehearsal. Sometimes that means 14-hour days and weekends at school and skipping meals or being on a diet of caffeine. I’m averaging 80 emails a day. So a shout-out to all of the parents who act as solid and constant support to their kids’ teachers: volunteering hours, skills, and words of encouragement, and sometimes even feeding us. You are the real MVPs. Being a Fine Arts teacher is an act of love, and I love and respect all of my colleagues who give so much to the craft. The secret is that it is beyond worth it. Despite the dehydration, smeared mascara, derpy face, scattered brain and overall exhaustion, I wouldn’t trade working with these brilliant and eager young artists for anything in the world.
