Wow wow it’s our 51st birthday today how can that be? We are both so thankful to be celebrating together. We were truly blessed to be born aa Twins to such a loving family. Having a summer birthday has always been fun and filled with great memories. When we were little girls growing up in Tampa we would have pool parties. As we grow older as teenagers in Florida we could not wait to celebrate our birthdays just the two of us at the beautiful Bush Gardens in Tampa, Florida. That was all before our diagnosis with MS . We can no longer tolerate the summer heat and jump, skip and run around. But...we stay can still get out and enjoy our birthdays together. We celebrate life, even though it looks much different than it used to be. We had a great day in Atlanta last week at the Ponce de Leon market where we had lunch and had fun scooting around on our scooters window shopping and enjoying our adult girls. Our girls got a kick out of watching people looking bewildered at us and trying to make sense of two young women on scooters just jetting around. We used to be self-conscious about using the scotters out in public. It’s not exactly the fashion look we dreamed of. But hey , MS is certainly not gonna stop us from having fun during our birthday month! Scooters are hip because we are out in the world. ‍ Last summer I retired from teaching. I had just turned 35 and it was a hard decision that some colleagues, friends, and family didn’t understand. Some people even said they were jealous I was able to stay home and many want to know my secret. So, I’ve decided to share it! • Are you ready?! . . . . Here’s the secret... • I am sick. Permanently. There’s no cure. ‍♀️ • So instead of teaching 6 year olds all day, I am trying to stay alive in a body that wants to shut down. Completing any task takes longer than it used to because my brain and limbs just don’t work the same anymore. I take naps several times a week and stretch out my tight muscles multiple times a day. I never know how I’ll feel from one day to the next; I can wake up feeling great one morning and like I was ran over by a bus the next. • Do you have any idea how exhausting that is? Hopefully you don’t. • Remember, NOT ALL DISABILITIES ARE VISIBLE! We may look good on the outside and be self destructing on the inside. I think what I struggle with most day to day is self love. When you are going to a new doctor weekly, being told what is and isn’t wrong with you regularly, having to talk about your feelings to strangers and not being able to do fun things because you’re exhausted... your self love gets a bit difficult.
