I spent all day yesterday and today debating weather posting this picture was a good idea or not... I am visible, and I am not afraid. • When I hear the argument that I’m “confused” for Transitioning, I can’t help but look back on my youth. No I am not confused, I was confused then I was lost I was scared, when I finally began to be my most authentic self I finally began to live. I have never been so sure of anything before. I am choosing to be visible because i have the privilege to do so. I have an amazing mother and family who have supported me no matter what, I have a wonderful boyfriend who is secure in his masculinity and accepts and loves me, I have a wonderful career that has allowed me to be my truest self. I have the privilege to use my platform to advocate for my community, because I refuse to accept the idea that we are a “phase” that we are “confused” that we are “sick”. I will not be erased, We will not be erased. I am unapologetically myself and I will fight for my rights and the rights of those who don’t have the privilege to be visible. my #TDOV post is 2 days late just like last year.... in anticipation, I really wanted to take do a super cute lil mini photoshoot with my senior portrait from high school, but in the 2 years that I’ve been socially transitioning (my HRT bday is June 20!), I’ve learned so much about myself and my womanhood that I couldn’t just NOT post about it at all. . . As fun as 2nd puberty is, documenting and noticing all the physical changes (“WHY ARE MY NIPPLES SO ITCHY”); reflecting on the emotional and mental development has been so much more substantial for me. One of the biggest blessings/curses that I’ve experienced throughout my transition has been being able to experience emotions on a completely different level. It’s almost like seeing colors that you’ve never noticed before, in detail that you were once blind to. . . Through all the ups and downs of this journey, I have learned to love the beautiful chaos that my life has become. Including the fact that I never take any cute pics (cough thirst traps cough) to post, it makes my heart swell to look back on how far I’ve come on the inside. One year ago I was anorexic, taking pills and feeling bad about everything around me. Here I am now, recovering, having a job and some better hopes ! Happy Trans EVERY Day of Visibility! ️‍ I decided to upload today instead of yesterday or the day before because #TDOV should not just be celebrated on the 31st of March - it should be celebrated 365 days a year! I decided to recreate a photo that I uploaded back in January 2017, because at the time, even though I had already commenced HRT (hormone replacement therapy) and started undergoing laser and electrolysis hair removal, I still had to shave my face daily... whether it was because of actual hair growth, dysphoria just for my own peace of mind. This photo may be “confronting” for some of the cis people who follow me, but this is a real and honest image of what MANY trans* women have to do on a daily basis... and I want visible for all my trans* sisters who endure the daily chore of having to shave their faces and bodies, no matter how far along they are in their own personal transition and gender identity journey. I know the struggle is very real, because I have also experienced this struggle... but we are all in this together! #transdayofvisibility

a day late for #transdayofvisibility but here's a comparison photo from Aug 2017 to last week Mar 2019. It's sometimes hard to condense this journey into something that is super clear or even linear. all I know is that there were parts of myself I didn't know existed. those parts slowly began to emerge once I started asking myself what it means to love all parts of me. I had friends who were asking some of the same questions. I listened. I learned. I turned inward - I listened. I learned. I'm still listening. I'm still learning. I still think there isn't a word in this context that can fully and accurately describe my transness/genderqueer identity. That most days I feel like a lil mix of everything. All days, I feel like Meesh. Everyday, I'm learning what being trans means to me. not much has changed btwn pic 1 & 2 other than a bit more acne from taking T, longer hair, & a spirit that is much, much more kind to myself in all my fluctuations & growing pains. visibility isn't enough. be in community with trans folks. listen. learn. learn from BIPoC. protect trans women. fund folks, if you have resources. support for the every day wins, and not just when there is tradegy that hits the community. love y'all, #tdov is everyday. @pearlshen

Trans people who live rurally often live at the intersection of hyper visibility amongst their rural neighbors and hyper isolation from other trans folks or supportive services. The @lgbtmap project just released some really helpful research. It showed that due to smaller and scattered populations in rural areas, rural trans folks who express any kind of gender diversity will be more noticeable than if they were living in an urban area. This affects everything from public safety to access to services to developing relationships where you live.
