Towering over 1500 ft above the desert floor, Shiprock is a most impressive sight. Named after the legend of the great bird that brought the Navajo from the north to their present land, Shiprock (Navajo for "winged rock" or "rock with wings") plays a significant role in Navajo religion, myth and tradition. . . Shiprock is located on Navajo Nation private property. Since I was not able to get as close as I wanted, I copied (stole?) Matt Smith's idea to do a 6 panel panorama to compress the background and increase detail, then crop to IG friendly size. This forest road in the Chama River Wilderness is about two hours north of Santa Fe and leads to kayaking, hiking, fishing, and camping destinations right on the Rio Chama. This night, I watched the sun set over the Frey Trail in Bandelier National Monument after hiking down to Tyuonyi. “Summited Wheeler Peak yesterday and it was amazingly gorgeous from start to finish. 9.6 miles 3,087 elevation gain and certainly challenging but doable. Still marveling at the jaw dropping beauty and proud of my body for getting me there...” @callalikethelily * * Williams Lake is an alpine lake in Taos , New Mexico, located high in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains below Wheeler Peak in the Wheeler Peak Wilderness of Carson National Forest. The lake is accessible via the Williams Lake Trail from the trailhead in Taos Ski Valley. The name is in reference to William Frazer, a gold miner who staked claims in the area and co-founded the mining camp of Twining during the late 1800's. Camping and campfires are permitted 300 feet from Williams, Lost, or Horseshoe Lakes. Camping is only permitted in pre-existing campsites. Plan on using Leave No Trace Ethics. www.fs.usda.gov
