Last week I had someone comment on a picture of me on FB wearing this sweatshirt and asked; “how is insulin a right?”
It turned into a decently lengthy debate. Their overall goal was trying to understand why we (Type 1 Diabetics) deserve the “right” to insulin that is technically not ours (man-made manufactured)
Having to debate why I believe i have the right to live is mentally exhausting. But also the reality of a type 1 diabetic. It’s never been a position I’ve been in before and it honestly took a toll on me.
However, I can’t get over the thought that this question is potentially running through other minds as well so I feel it’s necessary to share my thoughts on this specific question.
So Heres my reasoning to why I believe that ACCESS TO INSULIN IS A HUMAN RIGHT.
This person needed a very meticulous by the books answer. He wanted facts not opinions nothing along the lines of just being a decent human being and wanting other human beings to live.
“The right to life is a moral principle based on the belief that a human being has the right to live and, in particular, should not be killed by another human being” (in reference to a Wikipedia (!?!) page that he linked about human rights)
There are human beings behind these pharmaceutical companies that make every decision. They are literally killing people because their products (insulin) are either
1. Not made accessible to diabetics around the world or
2. Are so outrageously expensive that people cannot afford it.
Both cases eventually lead to death (us being killed by other human beings (people sitting behind big pharma)) ***Not having the right to life***

We are not exaggerating when we compare insulin to Oxygen for a type 1 diabetic. Without access to insulin we die. Without access to oxygen you die.
Dang I’m tipsy not incoherent thanks tho love you too check on me in a couple hours tag your drinking buddy

Something that’s been on my mind a lot lately is how DIFFERENT everyone’s diabetes is. My diabetes will not be the same as yours or anyone else’s.
Knowing this, it’s really import to keep track of your own progress and to not compare yourself and your diabetes to someone else’s.
I find it easy to see someone’s 24 hr blood sugar graph and wish mine looked that way. Sometimes I look at T1D girls stomachs and notice they don’t have the little scar tissue bumps and lumps that I do. And sometimes I just wish that my A1c could be lower, my blood sugars “better”, and then my life would be easier.
We need to focus on our own path and journey. Celebrate when we reach our own goals and know that we are trying our best. Focus more on creating a better relationship with our own diabetes. That’s really the only way to make this disease “easier”, is to accept that everyone is different and to work on yourself. Leave a comment of one thing you’re trying to work on in your relationship with diabetes. Mine is trying to go low less, because I go low almost every night before bed
