Wednesday Faculty Spotlight:
Dr. Zahilly Salinas PT, DPT is one of our mentors and faculty members. Dr. Salinas graduated with her DPT from UM! She keeps very busy working as our site coordinator for DPT students, teaching within the DPT program, as well as mentoring and teaching our neuro residents.
Dr. Salinas is a vestibular rehabilitation specialist. Previously we've stated that Dr. Garay is the Queen of Dizzy. Since Dr. Salinas is stationed at our Plantation UHealth clinic we consider her to be our Queen in the North!

Quick follow-up to our post yesterday about training for a healthy Vestibular System
Here’s a fun way to stimulate your on-board BALANCING system:
Sit on the floor and spin to one direction ↔️ and then the other, begin slowly and stop if you get dizzy ; then go as fast as you’re able to handle.
And if you have kids they’d love to play with you.
Next, extend legs behind your body as you use your hands to support and lower your upper body.
As you do this, see if you can FIXATE your eyes on a target.
One of the benefits of doing your vestibular work on the floor is the sense of safety it has for your brain.
If you happen to do too much and get dizzy, you won’t fall and hurt yourself.
Further more, as infants, our visual and vestibular systems developed to “sync” with each other while we were on the floor, exploring our world.
In other words, our eyes and ears were trained to INTEGRATE received information ℹ️ with our body, creating Sensory Match.
Thus, working in that way now can help us “reset” our senses, training them to “match” again.
Have fun and let us know how you do. .

My world flipped when I had my first episode of extreme dizziness-which came with extreme anxiety. I could never fully explain to people the feeling, and no one could understand what was happening to me, even most doctors. I was terrified because no one could help, or take the symptoms away, and because of the extreme anxiety, I developed more symptoms. I felt like I was dying, and was loosing hope. I was forced to make a decision, either accept this new normal, or keep pushing myself to get the help I so desperately needed. I chose to push myself. In time, I finally found a few doctors that had more insight into what I was going through, I found groups on FB with people who knew exactly what I was going through, I did Vestibular rehabilitation therapy and I pushed myself to my limits. I chose to do things people wouldn’t imagine doing when feeling the way I did in order to retrain my brain. But because of all my persistence, I was able to regain my life back. I was able to take care of my daughter again, and even get a job. I could have easily stayed in bed instead of going to a grocery store where it was sensory overload for someone like me, but I did it because I knew I needed to. Sometimes we think things are too hard, or even impossible, so we don’t even try. But what if you knew you wouldn’t fail? What if you knew that the only person stopping you, is you? You can achieve the things you want to achieve... but you need to knock down whatever walls are currently stopping you, to achieve them.

CORE-TEX Collective A lot going on here. Be sure to read @moms4healthusa great thought process below. Eye and head movement has a significant influence on the whole body response Posted @withrepost • @moms4healthusa ESSENTIAL MOM MOVEMENT SERIES: Surgery prep: Exercise 2️⃣
.
Did you know that movement of your ribcage coupled with breath and an eye driver can affect fascial connections through the ribcage into the pelvis and pelvic floor?!
.
My diaphragm is always getting compressed and I am always working on breath mechanics so this is a perfect exercise to to feed both!!
.
The variables are hand position, eye driver and breath in the environment of the true stretch! .
Press into the wall while exhaling forcefully and keep pressure while exhale eyes move with the hips.
.
You could also vary the eye driver to go opposite the hips! And the breath to inhale with the rotation!
.
The variable surface of the @reactive_training Core-Tex inputs motion from the bottom up through my core! FANTASTIC!
.
Enjoy the three levels with variable breath and eye driver for 3 rounds!

CORE-TEX Collective We love the combination of cognitive and reactive variables on the reactive environment of Core-Tex ✅
Sub cortical response time is challenged with executive decision making and focus=BDNF heaven

Here I am at Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy practicing how to properly walk! Heel-toe, heel-toe. My vertigo affects me so much that my brain cannot remember the basics of walking so with the help of my wonderful physical therapist, I am starting to be able to walk again! I am still super wobbly when I walk, I loose my balance, I get dizzy, I get nervous, but I am really trying my best so that I can make progress! I’m having to remind myself a lot that it’s progress, not perfection. •

About 5 years ago I sat on my sofa trying to psych myself up to walk to the pharmacy at the end of my road. I didn’t do it, and waited until the next day. My vestibular migraine symptoms were just too much to attempt it. The dizziness, spinning and floaty feeling made me feel so unsafe and scared. That day happened more times than I can remember.
.
Yesterday before running this 5km I was in tears at the start-line. I felt this huge pressure to run the race and prove to myself that I was ‘better’ than all those days on the sofa. I had barely slept the night before and was so nervous. My health is all over the place, with some conditions better but others worse. I’ve found so much hope in getting fitter. I feel stronger physically and mentally, and so much more like myself. It makes me feel more resilient in dealing with whatever happens health-wise in the future.
.
Thank you to everyone that DM’d me yesterday- it was lovely of you and the support from you guys means so much .

Sometimes all you need are your best friends to keep up and never let you fall. (I was determined to walk and so we linked arms so I wouldn’t fall and they have quite literally kept me up/keep me from falling)☺️
