Introducing 9-year-old Cocker Spaniel Krico, whose story we’re sharing to mark Cancer Survivors Day today. Krico is a real charmer with all the staff and one of his talents is to sing to us on demand! . Krico was sadly diagnosed with prostatic cancer in September last year and was referred to our oncology hospital by another referral centre, to explore treatment options available. 70% of prostatic cancer cases end up having urinary incontinence so many dogs aren’t referred or treated by their vets who assume the outlook is too bad, or no options exist. . However Krico has been having both intra-arterial (IA) chemotherapy and standard IV chemotherapy under the care of Specialist Gerard McLauchlan, which has reduced his prostate size by 30%. The benefits of IA chemotherapy is that it’s delivered directly into an artery as close to the tumour as possible so we can maximise the amount of chemotherapy drug delivered to the cancer cells, whereas traditional chemotherapy has to pass via the heart and lungs before being delivered to the cancer and so is diluted by the time it reaches its target. Once the IA chemotherapy had successfully shrunk the prostate, our Oncology Surgery Specialist Nick Bacon removed the prostate entirely, including all the cancerous tissue. Krico maintained full urinary continence after surgery and is at home loving life. . During his treatment with us his family have reported how well he’s been, with no signs of side effects from his chemotherapy. Krico’s a great example of a patient living well with cancer and hopefully gives hope to other families that there are options available which can help give an extended, good quality of life. #CancerSurvivorsDay #Livingwellwithcancer #fitzpatrickreferrals #oncologyspecialists #veterinaryspecialists #animalcancer #caninecancer #prostaticcancer #prostatecancer #chemotherapy #intraarterialchemotherapy #cockerspaniel #cockerspanielsofinstagram #cockersofig #animalsmatter #animalsarefamily #fitzfamily

This week’s patient spotlight features Ebony, a sweet 8-year-old German Shepherd Dog/Labrador cross and long-term patient of ours. Sadly she has twice been referred as an emergency with severe hind limb weakness after a intervertebral disc burst into her spinal canal. . Under the care of Professor Clare Rusbridge, Ebony has had two spinal surgeries to remove the burst disc material and haemorrhage. Three years since the surgeries, she now visits us to have epidural steroid injections to help relieve the pain caused by a separate lumbosacral disc disease. . Back home in Cheshire, Ebony’s devoted mum ensures she is happy and enjoying a great quality of life with gentle walks, scent work, enrichment games and playing with her best pal Arnold (pictured right). “She’s a very caring, loving, gentle dog who absolutely adores people.” . Meet Teddy, a beautiful Maine Coon cat who this week bravely took his first dip in the hydrotherapy pool as part of his rehabilitation programme following a car accident in May this year. . Poor Teddy suffered a fractured pelvis and leg after being hit by a car and was urgently referred to Fitzpatrick Referrals, under the care of Surgical Resident Jayson. . It’s been a long road to recovery for Teddy following surgery, 12 weeks crate rest and short walks on a harness, he has some muscle wastage so is now visiting our hydrotherapy team to help him get back on his feet. . He took to it like a duck to water! Well done Teddy! . #FitzpatrickReferrals #FelineHydrotherapy #VeterinarySpecialists #Hydrotherapy #MaineCoon #MaineCoonsofinstagram #catsofinstagram #catswimming #animalsarefamily #fitzfamily #naturalbornswimmer

2-year-old West Highland Terrier Louie came to us after a suspected head trauma and was treated across both our neurology and soft tissue specialisms. . Prior to referral he had developed signs of hyperactivity, was drooling and had a vacant expression. He was also unresponsive when called, hitting obstacles and circling around a perimeter of a room. . Under the care of Professor Clare Rusbridge, Louie was examined, underwent tests and an MRI scan. He was transferred to Senior Clinician Laurent Findji in our soft tissue team who found he had a large portocaval shunt (highlighted in orange) - whereby a blood vessel ‘shunts’ the blood coming from the gut past the liver resulting in the neurotoxic compounds affecting the brain. . Thankfully, following surgery to dissect the shunt, Louie recovered well without problems.
