On my couple days off last week I was finally able to visit the Old Fort House Museum. The house was built in 1772 by Patrick Smyth. The house was constructed using timber from Fort Edward (also the town’s name) which was utilized during the French and Indian War. Smyth was the Superintendent of Public Property under the British colonial government. The house had various owners as a single family, was a tavern visited by George Washington, and was a boarding house. The museum opened to the public in 1953. Solomon Northup, who penned his tragic memoir “12 Years a Slave” also resided here and was married on the property in 1828. Northup, a free man, was tricked, kidnapped and sold into slavery in the Deep South for 12 years before he met a Canadian working on the plantation who got word back to New York. With efforts from the Governor, his family, the residents of this area, and his childhood friend who was an attorney, Solomon was rescued and emancipated from the Louisiana plantation and returned here to this area. His fate is unknown, he seems to vanish from any records after 1863.... if you swipe to the next photo you will see the Smyth house in 1928. Looks a lot different right? Those dang Victorians got to it . Although we all know I prefer that era, it’s so interesting to see how a house can evolve and now has been brought back to 1772, as it should be. This house has an immense amount of history attached to it. #summerofpreservation

This happened today. We were pruning some of our apple and pear trees this am when I came within two inches of bumping my face into this swarm of honey bees. Pure luck that we were in the little orchard today and found them. (They don’t appear to be from my hives but a random swarm that just showed up) Experienced bee keepers love to find and capture swarms (so I’m told!) and start new hives with them. I quickly called my beekeeper friend who told me how to collect them. And then I quickly called my farm woman friend who I knew wouldn’t flinch at helping wrangle a thousand loose bees - Maeve wasn’t strong enough to cut the branch! We got the swarm into a small temporary hive without incident. I think I’m legit now!
