More photos over at @hudsonvalleyruins •••••• Teatown announced last week that it will move forward with demolition of the Croft, an architecturally unique mansion it purchased in 2010. The Croft was built c. 1914 by Arthur Vernay, an antiques dealer. The Tudor style dwelling is said to include architectural elements of historic English homes. Gerard Swope, Sr., Chairman of General Electric, later owned the estate. In 1957, six years after Swope’s death, his heirs donated 194 acres of the estate to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden for an outreach program. The Croft mansion remained privately owned while the estate’s stables and carriage house buildings became the nature center and office for Teatown Lake Reservation. Teatown incorporated in 1971 to manage the property independent of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. . The Croft mansion was occupied as a private house until 2008. With funding from New York State and Westchester County, Teatown acquired 67 acres to add to the "Green space" of the preserve. The house merely "came with that purchase" and is not in Teatown's interest to use or preserve. . July 4th is one of the most celebrated holidays in the United States. With long days on the beach and patriotic parties at night, most people have a fun filled day. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Fourth of July is said to be the most hazardous day to be out on the road mainly due to alcohol related incidents.
