What’s in a name? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I was 10 years old, my brother got a copy of Diablo for PC, and I loved playing it. I spent a lot of my free time that age playing PC games. My dad would run MS-DOS to start one up for me, and I would sneakily watch and eventually learned how to do it myself. I was only allowed to play games when I had permission, so this was huge for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It was funny, in Diablo I somehow ended up being the leader of a major clan. I told everyone I was a 13 year old girl, named Kaitlin. Why did a bunch of men decide to let me - a perceived pre teen girl - boss them around? Still haven’t figured that one out. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Fast forward 19 years. Once I decided to transition, I was thinking of a name. At first I thought of Kaitlin, but it just didn’t feel right. My mother was going to name me Michelle if I was born a girl, so because I didn't choose the name, it felt more authentic for me personally. I didn’t choose it, just like I didn’t choose to be trans. How poetic. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Kaitlin was my go to girl name for all of my life before transitioning. I don’t know why I chose it or how, but I used to want to be a Kaitlin. I can’t really quantify that thought process. How can someone feel like a certain name identifies them more than another? What makes someone “look” like a name? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When I chose Michelle - I realized that it fit in ways that Kaitlin didn’t for me, I feel that I LOOK like a Michelle, and I’m not sure what this means, but I FEEL like a Michelle too. I suspect that one grows into their name, and it defines you only in the sense that your history with the name does. But I’m not certain of that. In my case I wasn’t born into this name, I haven’t been known by this name for more than a few years, and still, it feels as natural as if it was always that way. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Tell me in the comments about your new name! So you wanna know what kept me busy? While I was not active on Instagram? Beside my job which takes most of my time? (I'm an mechanical engineer, working as a process developer for an automotive supplier, just in case you didn't know ). Travelling the world. By train, by car, by plane and by foot (which means me going the Camino inglés last year). Learning how to dive and learning how to speak Spanish (at least a bit). Lifting weights and training for a half marathon (OK that one just started). Climbing the highest mountain of Germany and chilling with Netflix and Puzzles (yes puzzle, not pizza ). Dancing all night long and working in the garden. My patch work family losing friends and making new ones. Splitting up and falling in love again. More than ever before. Neben meinem Job, der das meiste meiner Zeit braucht? (ich bin Maschinenbauingenieurin die als Prozessentwicklerin bei einem Automobilzulieferer arbeitet. Nur falls ihr das nicht wusstet ). Die Welt bereisen. Mit dem Zug, dem Auto, dem Flugzeug und zu Fuß (womit ich den camino inglés im letzten Jahr meine). Tauchen und spanisch lernen (letzteres zumindest ein bisschen). Gewichte heben und für einen Halbmarathon trainieren (OK, damit hab ich erst kürzlich angefangen). Den höchsten Berg Deutschlands erklettern und mit Netflix und Puzzles entspannen (ja, Puzzle, nicht Pizza ). Die ganze Nacht durch tanzen und im Garten arbeiten. Meine Patch work Familie Freunde verlieren und neue Freunde finden. Trennung und sich wieder neu verlieben. Mehr als jemals zuvor. Es gibt viele Dinge in meinem Leben die mich glücklich machen.
