#WhyTheMarines // Aspiring Nurses! @mrs_menzies Here is her story: Going through high school I was very athletic. I played ice hockey and field hockey for my entire high school career. I did not succeed in high school. My grades were poor and I didn’t apply myself at all. I specifically remember my mother saying, “What are you going to do when you turn 18, because you will not be living off of me for the rest of your life.” I was 18 years old in 2008 when I was taking a nap and my phone rang. It was a Marine Corps recruiter. Why would he be calling me? “Hey Brianne, My name is Sgt. Morris. I am sitting here with Dwayne. He actually just enlisted this morning. Want to come in and talk to me about the Marine Corps and your future?” I don’t know what it was but it was not the path that everyone else was talking. I am a natural born leader. Let’s make something clear really quick. You either walk with comfort or you don’t. I never walked with comfort. If I did, that means I was with my friends and they were most important. Well with me, everything was not about friends. I had a few good ones, the rest were hiding in the woods smoking. I was not, I played sports. And I was good. I was on JV my freshman year andsubbing Varsity level when the varsity girls needed a rest. I made Varsity my sophomore year, I started my junior year, I made the All star team my senior year. I didn’t follow a crowd. I was me. I continue, to this day, to do what I feel is right for ME, not my parents or my friends. I walked in and sat down with Sgt. Morris. “What do you want to do when you are an adult?” “Umm, I actually want to be a nurse. Do they have nursing in the Marines?” “No Brianne, unfortunately they do not have nursing in the Marine Corps.” Well my time here was wasted, so I felt. I came to the office to see what the Marine Corps had for me and realized that the career choice that I wanted was not even offered, I began to decline. Sgt. Morris explained, “Listen I’m not here to sell you. I’m here to tell you the Corps is able to make you into one of the most defined, independent, respected individuals in the United States.”
