This magnificent example from our collection of POW Bone Ship Models has a story that's a bit different than the other 31 that we show in our treasure chamber, on deck 8 of the museum. It is, like the others, the work of a prisoner of war in Britain, during the Napoleonic Wars. The unknown Autor was most certainly French, and combined a great handy talent with a good knowledge of how ships we built and worked. This models were made using small pieces of timber and the left-over bones from the meat rations that prisoners were given twice a week. This piece represent a British 1st rate ship-of-the-line, armed with 108 guns. Our experts have followed the data of the ship and determined it was completed and sold in the year 1804. Still, there is something weird with the model. If you look at the second picture, you will see a detail of one of its anchors. That type of admiralty anchors appeared much later in the 19th century. This detail brought out team to give a closer look to the model. The rigging is not the original one, but this is not strange in this masterpieces that are over 200 years old. The curious thing is that some pieces are made of ivory, and not the usual beef and mutton bones used for this model. Our conclusion is that the model got a major overhaul at some point in the second half of the 19th century. That's when the new anchors and some decorations were added. Nevertheless, it is a an amazing work an an example how art has been modified through the years in many cases. We are proud of presenting to the public the worldwide largest collection of Bone Ship Models in our exhibition. A tour of our treasure chamber should be part of any visit to the museum.

During the Napoleonic Wars and other conflicts of the early 19th century, Geat Britain captured over 100.000 prisoners of war. Specially those taken early in the conflict, spent many years on British soil or shore. The conditions under which they were interned varied a lot; between those who suffered in awful ship hulks and the officers that could, under parole, enjoy an almost free civilian life. Those among the POWs that were talented enough with their hands, could earn money producing and selling objects of all kinds. The most famous among those objects are the Bone Ship Models that they made from the leftover bones from the meat in their rations. Those among you who have been following us a while may have seen some examples of our marvellous collection of Bone Ship Models. The collection Peter Tamm also owns and display other maritime related decorative objects made by those prisoners. This little wonder (approximately 35 cm wide) is a curious example of them. It is a diorama made of painted, carved wood, displaying a covered dry Dock that contains a three-decker ship-of-the-line. Like most of this works, the artist is unknown. You can find this diorama and many other exhibits from the early 19th century in the treasure chamber of the museum, on deck 8.

On this #4thofJuly, we would like to whish all our US-American friends a happy Independence Day! What better way to do so than with our wonderful model of the first ship ever to wear the name USS Lexington. This beautiful brigantine was originally named Wild Duck. In the year 1776, she was set to send a cargo of gunpowder to Philadelphia to support the 13 colonies in their War of Independence against the British. She was then purchased for the Continental Navy (the origin of the US Navy), refitted for war and named Lexington, after the fist battle of the war. Her American career during the war was short but intense. She captured a total of 21 ships and successfuly participated in the Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet. She was captured by the British frigate pearl on the 20th of December 1776. The crew were prisoners aboard but they managed to overpower their captors and brought the ship to Baltimore. The Lexington was then sent to European waters, to continue the war. After more succès full captures, she met the British cutter Alert on September the 19th 1777. Aber a long fight, the Lexington ran out of gunpowder and had to surrender. This magnificent model in a scale of 1:20 is the work of Max Wilhelm Weidtmann. It is on display in our exhibition on deck 2.

This Sunday (30th of July) it's Pirates-Sunday at the museum! From 1 to 5 pm the young mates can put their capacities as sailors to the test and get the official pirate diploma of the museum. The event takes place at the main entrance of the museum and is free of charge. The Wapen von Hamburg III was actually the opposite of a pirate ship. She was built by the city of Hamburg in 1722 to protect commercial convoys from pirate attacks in the North Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. She was armed with 52 guns and manned by a crew of 283. Her impressive model in a scale of 1:16 is on display at the atrium between deck 2, 3 and 4.
