Happy Birthday to the late, Joe Frazier. A man who tore it up with the best in a very tough era losing to only two fighters in his whole career: twice to Muhammad Ali and twice to George Foreman. A man who inspired many of us through his sheer determination and will. A fighting style of relentless pressure and shocking power with his left hook, Smokin' Joe will forever go down as one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. Happy Birthday, Joe and RIP
46 years ago today, the boxing world witnessed what was coined as 'The Fight'. The match between Joe Frazier & Muhammad Ali, held at MSG, was the first time 2 undefeated boxers fought for the heavyweight title. In the eyes of many, it was a reflection of the times — a showdown between the counterculture in the guise of Ali and the pro-war establishment represented- somewhat illogically- by Frazier. Much of this was, of course, established by Ali’s famous bark, but when it came time to fight Smokin’ Joe let his fists do the talking. For 15 rounds the legendary fighters brawled amid a media circus, pummelling each other to the point that rumours of their deaths circulated after the final bell. Frazier walked away with the win by UD.
