Melon-cucumber Greenhouse update. Mostly growing well, 2 have succumbed to their fate. I put in a mess of string today so they have got something to scramble up. It's getting so hot and humid in there, which they are probably enjoying currently, but need better ventilation for the summer. .

I’ve had a lovely time buying plants this morning, back to a nursery that I used to go to as a horticultural student ..... nearly thirty years ago.
I’m sad about all the plastic pots at the nursery, but I can reuse them, potting on plants I’ve grown from seed.
My love of horticulture, especially the plants, has never faded, I’ve promised myself to do more designing of planting plans for clients ...... do what you love, because time is precious, & who doesn’t love plants!?
I snapped this pic of this obligingly self-seeded aquilegia in front of the shed. I salvaged the old re-bar trellis from a skip years ago. It’s perfect for the Clematis to scramble up.
If you’re buying starts from your garden center, look for multiple sprouts per container. They’re often to your advantage, especially when the sprouts are still in the early stages of development. This is when they’re pliable and easy to transplant.
•
Growers generally over-seed containers to guarantee at least one of 3 or more seeds germinate and thrive. Sometimes they all flourish and grow - which is amazing - and, if the sprouts are young enough it’s easy to separate them out. Plus, you’ll save money and effort.
•
That said, I often avoid 6-packs or 4” pots with multiple starts when they’re overly mature, overcrowded, and fighting for space. But! this situation can be saved by cutting out the smaller sprouts and transplanting the most robust of the bunch. Use scissors or clippers, snip smaller plants near soil level, and then add cuttings to salads or whatever else you’re cooking up. Your garden will thrive if plants have adequate room to breath.
•
Just don’t make the process of gardening and growing things harder than it needs to be. Plants want to grow just like you and me, and there’s joy in that.

Six months' progress on the back garden, transforming a blank canvas to my home allotment. I'm so pleased with how it's coming on. By this time next year it should be exactly where I want it. ️ #allotment #nature #homegrown#growyourown #urbanfarm #garden #gardener #gardenchat #vegetablegarden #veggiegarden #vegetables #growyourownfood #homesteading #urbangarden #allotments #allotmenteering #allotmentgarden #nodig
Gardening is all about problem-solving and overcoming your site conditions. We have our fair share of struggles here. Thankfully, by the time everything looks like this pic from last summer we are in love. Then winter gives us amnesia, and we start it all over in the spring.
.
As much as I complain, I’m grateful to be more tuned in to and working with Mother Nature than I ever have been before.
.
All this to say, if you’d like to follow along on a soggy, late-spring garden tour I’ve posted a video from this morning in my stories. There’s always so much work that has to happen before we see the sweet IG pics, no?
You guys, thank you for all the love yesterday!!! I’m writing to ask you for a big favor. I have a chance to raise some serious funds for garden education in our community. Please click on the link in my profile to vote for my yard in the @betterhomesandgardens #bestfrontyardcontest . If our garden wins, with the prize I could bring a bunch of inner city kids from the Bronx out to the Rye Nature Center for summer camp and give a big donation to the incredible school garden at Port Chester Middle School. Please vote for my front yard. See my stories for details. You guys have been with me every step of the way & I can’t thank you all enough!! #bhgbestfrontyard #inmygardentoday #bhghome #bhgflowers #raisedbedgarden #gardenchat #gardentime #frontyardgarden #ediblegarden #growyourown #eatwhatyougrow #slowflowers #happygardener #gardendesign #americana #growyourowngardendreams #lucysgardenlife
MrB’s brilliant brainwave of a bag holder for day 12 #mymonthontheplot begins with a ‘b’ & yes I could’ve chose Buddy, beans, bees, butternuts or even beer but I have to admit the idea of using an old kitchen bin to hold bags while filling with a mixture of soil, compost & manure was too good not to share & a top tip for any partners out there who’d much rather be doing something else or for solo gardeners who struggle filling a bag single handed he also used this method to fill the bags with manure from a farmer friend at silly o’clock on a weekend meaning I could stay tucked up in bed thanks MrB you’re a keeper #hesakeeper #reuse #recycle #kitchengarden #allotment #gardentips #gardenchat #gardening #hacks #toptip
Because of the weather it has been about impossible to get our new boxes in this year! We moved their locations and did two bigger ones! Hoping to yield more! But we got the boxes built and in, and got all of our sprouts in! Let’s grow! #mrsgrows . . . .
