This three-quarters armor in the @germanisches_nationalmuseum (inv. W 2823) is said to be an officers armor. It has been made around 1550 in Brunswick, where at that time had already established quite a significant armor production. It is made of iron, that had been steeled, decorated with brass rivets and the hallmarked motif of a iron chain around the breast- and backplate. An iron chain had been a symbol for authority, so this is consistent with the assumption that it is an officer's armor. On various parts of the armor, points are hallmarked, possibly to mark these parts as belonging together, if very similar armor was kept with them together or had been produced in the workshop to the same time. On most parts of the armor there are marks with eleven points, on the right elbow-cop are twelve points and on the left one thirteen. So I think there were at least a minimum of thirteen of these armor existant. Thus, this medium-quality armor would be an example of early mass production. In the following decades, the rulers repeatedly ordered quantities of identical armor for their personal guards and officers.

Luxury in silk. 18th century fashion
Special exhibition from 5.07.2018 - 6.01.2019
In 2017, the GNM succeeded in acquiring a remarkable object: a one-piece silk dress from the period around 1760 with a maturing skirt of roughly the same time. The silk fabric's colourfulness is exceptionally well preserved, the light blue background with the colourful floral decor is hardly faded - extremely rare in textiles of this age, but what was worn then and with such a dress?
Luxurious jewellery, accessories and "gallantery merchandise" such as headgear and collars, fans and gloves, silk stockings and shoes complete the picture of a lady dressed "à la mode" in the exhibition. Contemporary representations and extracts from historical literature also convey a multi-faceted picture of the enormous craftsmanship required to produce such elaborate clothing and accessories. With around 100 exhibits, the exhibition offers a fascinating insight into the clothing luxury of the 18th century and also deals with various issues of historical textile and clothing research.

FUNERARY HATCHMENT for Hieronymus Kress, 1477/78: The coat of arm shows a man’s body holding a sword with his teeth. According to an old legend an ancestor of the Kress family lost his arms and legs in a battle. But he didn’t give up and continued to fight with the sword in his mouth.

This armor for the foot-tournament in the @germanisches_nationalmuseum (inv. W 2770) has been made by the Augsburg armorer Anton Peffenhauser in 1591. As it was customary at this time for armor of the high nobility, the armor was elaborately decorated, it has been blued, gilded and etched. The armor was ordered by Sophie of Brandenburg as a gift for her husband Elector Christian I of Saxony along with five other foot-tournament armor, but Christian I died shortly before the armor could be delivered. Nevertheless, the armor was later used at the court in Dresden in tournaments, as evidenced by numerous small dents. At the so-called foot tournament over the barrier, no armor was worn on the legs. In the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden @kunstsammlungendresden are many similar armor, which are executed on a modular basis and thus were used for different types of tournament. Elector Christian I of Saxony, like his father Elector August, was somewhat old-fashioned in terms of the armor that he commissioned by Anton Peffenhauser in Augsburg. Armor built on a basic armor in the modular principle, were since the 80s of the 16th century no longer the latest fashion accordingly.
