~ Athena MacGrove and Bear Necessities for #adweedressage ~
Ah, dressage. Bear’s least favorite of his two disciplines. He’s lazy by nature, and the impulsion and energy required by dressage has never been his favorite. Still, he’s damn cute when he pushes himself into the bit and moves from the hind end. I started today by stretching myself and Bear, letting him sink in deep into the stretches to loosen up his muscles. Then, I brushed him until he shone and ran a comb through his mane until it was poofy. Currying is his favorite part of our routine, so I made sure to do it extra long so he could enjoy it more. At this point, most of the other competitors were already heading out to the warmup arena, so I hurriedly shoved my saddle on and followed them. We didn’t do much in the warmup arena, because Bear was feeling good and I wanted to save his energy. After what seemed like an eternity, we were finally called into the show arena. I started my routine with a bow, and quickly picked up an extended trot. Bear was super. He could sense how much I wanted to win, and I think he lifted his knees even higher and moved with more purpose. We performed lots and lots of circles at the trot, 10 and 20 meters, all over the arena. Our finale maneuver was cantering down the centerline, changing leads every four strides. Bear can never seem to get them in any less than four. One day, I’d like him to be able to get lead changes every stride, but he’s still learning and he is stubborn as hell so I’ll give him time. I bowed again to finish my routine, and flopped onto Bear’s neck to give him a big ol’ hug the second we weren’t being judged anymore.

Bear’s body paint took me about an hour. Not because it was difficult, but because I kept being indecisive and a total perfectionist and each marking needed to be perfect. I almost cried because I have tiny hands and I needed to put a handprint on Bear’s side. Luckily, at that moment, @kateprettymoon passed by me with her perfectly sized hands, and I knew what I had to do. Kate yelled “hey!” as I took her by the wrist, dipped her hand in paint, and slapped it on Bear before she could react. “Thank you,” I told her happily, and she just gave me A Look before walking away. I knew I was in for one of the worst revenge pranks in the world. As the paint dried, I finished braiding feathers into Bear’s mane and tail and carefully dotted black paint onto my own forehead.
Our theme was unlikely friendship. Bear was a native american, and I was an outlaw. We both weren’t accepted into society, so throughout the course of the routine, we learned to love each other. Now, my horses aren’t liberty horses. I don’t prioritize teaching them tricks. Bear doesn’t know how to rear, or lay down on command, or bow. I don’t think those are useful things for a hunter horse to know. However, I’ll be damned if any of my horses can’t do a spanish walk. Our routine wasn’t very technically difficult. I had Bear canter lots of circles around me, and we’d alternate backing up and trotting forward. He did a few marvelous spins as well. Our spanish walk was definitely the most advanced trick, as well as the best. When I cued him for it with my dressage whip, he picked his feet up with huge enthusiasm, and he knew what he had to do.
He’s the bestest boy. Now, I’m trying to remember if that paint is washable or not.

~AMG Bohemian Rhapsody, Green Horse Class~
Way to go, show photographer... you managed to catch me at the most awkward smile possible ♀️ Anyway, Boo was superb today, even though we had a minor meltdown in the trailer. It’s been a while since she was away from lil Lola. I made it to Moorland with plenty of time to spare, thankfully, and spent my extra two hours or so just combing out all the caked mud from Boo’s tail. Hopefully it looks alright. I shrugged on an old brown show jacket, made sure Boo had no weird green spots on her stocking, and entered into the arena. The judge asked for walk, trot, and halt from both directions, and Boo did wonderfully with no temper tantrums. There was a VERY attractive stallion nearby who stole most of Boo’s attention, but I could keep her focus most of the time with a well-timed click. Her ears did remain on him the whole time, though, and there was nothing I could do about it. Oh well. Maybe when the show is over, I’ll approach the owner about breeding. Man, today was almost perfect with Bingo. I’d give it a 6.5/10 stars for cooperation, which is awesome, because on a good day Bingo is 5/10. I’ll be backing him soon, so I wanted to make sure his groundwork is rock solid before I start him under saddle. We worked on moving away from aids in a halter; so, moving forward, back, and side to side when I ask him to. He was great! Didn’t like the dressage whip one bit, but he got used to it over time. He really wanted to nibble on it towards the end, which was cute, but not great for training. I called it a day when he figured out which end was his hind and which was his front, and moved the corresponding end when I asked him to. He is getting turns on the forehand and haunches, slowly but surely. Another bit of progress is that he trusts me enough to not swivel his whole head towards me when I move around, although his ears still follow. The last thing I wanted to do was practice tying, and that was where he had a little meltdown. I tied him to a fence and walked away a few steps, and he tried to follow me. When the rope tugged at him, he had a little baby moment and pulled back as hard as he physically could. Thankfully, the fence is sturdy and he’s not super strong, but my heart did beat a little faster as he leaned back with all his tiny might. Thankfully, I got him untied before he could break his neck, and we spent the rest of the day sitting on the lawn and eating snacks together. #wssmm #wssmmbingo
