I’ve just finished Margaret Murray’s GOD OF THE WITCHES, un utterly discredited (but nonetheless enthralling) piece of anthropological fiction that provided what Disney imagineers call the “backstory” for the modern Wicca movement—that the persecuted witches of medieval Europe were in truth holdouts for the pre-Christian religion of the Horned God of fertility, vilified by Christians as Satan. Murray’s theory, in the eyes of her critics, was a stalking horse for a feminist agenda (Christian patriarchy vs. “wise women”). If so, she lost the battle but won the war, sowing the seeds of an anthropologically dodgy, historically dubious narrative whose “alternate history” was just the backstory modern pagans like Gerald Gardner were looking for. Read as anthropology, GOD OF THE WITCHES inspires nonstop harrumphs and eye-rolls; read as occult fiction in the WICKER MAN mode, it’s endlessly fascinating.
