Probably the best place to enjoy Vilnius panorama is the hill of Three Crosses. According to the legend crosses were built there since forever to commemorate a group of monks who were martyred in the 14th century. Seven monks were killed and seven were tied to wooden crosses and floated down the Neris River. In 1916 wooden crosses were replaced by majestic monument by Polish-Lithuanian sculptor and architect Antanas Vivulskis. His work is well known in Krakow as well, just check out the monument for Grunwald battle. However, during Soviet times Tree Crosses were demolished and buried on the same hill. The current monument was built by the architect and sculptor, K. Šilgalis in 1989, when the Soviet Union began to collapse.
