Long time, no intro. Hi! ‍♀️ I’m Nicole Burke and I’m the creator of Rooted Garden and am just so thankful for the amazing 70k + of you that are here with me now. Can I tell you the story of how this all began? It was just 4 years ago this month when I started dreaming of starting something new. I was 36 and had spent the previous 8 years with my 4 little kids at home, raising babies and preschoolers, doing contract philanthropic work, and also learning to garden in our backyard. I was happy but turning 36 had a big impact on me. My grandfather, one of my favorite people, had passed away at 74. I did the math and realized that if I was lucky enough to live to his age, I was nearly halfway there already. I was in the middle of this ‘midlife’ surprise when the unthinkable happened: two of my dear friends, also young mothers, were diagnosed with cancer, cancer that wouldn’t be cured. Their diagnoses literally changed my perspective on everything. I suddenly had this impulse to do all the things. I wanted to start something of my own, to impact people, and make a difference in the world but I also wanted to be home with my kids and husband. So in the fall of 2015, I tried a bunch of things-I applied to be a teacher, to work at @mdandersoncancercenter and even for @stjude but none of these would allow me to pick up my preschooler at noon or make the unique mark I was hoping for. So I began considering whether I could start a business related to the thing I loved so much-my kitchen garden. A little embarrassed, I nervously announced that I was launching Rooted Garden in November of 2015, thinking first that I would sell salad harvests from my own garden. But, to my surprise, the company grew quickly in a different direction. I met the most amazing clients and just listened to them-they wanted a beautiful garden, help with planting and maintenance and less overwhelm. So I did that. Dozens of times over. Then I learned a thing or two about our banks, and realized that by just moving my money to a different one - boy am I making a difference?! IF YOU WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE TOO, please stay for a minute and learn why carefully choosing your bank matters a lot more than you think. . . Source: @sierraclub “While the world’s scientists issue increasingly dire warnings about the climate crisis we face without immediate action, major global banks are essentially pouring gasoline on the fire - and AMERICA’S LARGEST BANKS are doing the most damage of all… . . So what do these banks do that’s so bad They support fossil fuel projects and other climate dangerous operations! “Along with Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, the largest US banks are all in the top “dirty dozen” of global fossil fuel financing. Together, these US banks account for an alarming 37% of global banks’ fossil fuel financing since the Paris Agreement was adopted.” . . So if you care about the environment and is pro things like renewable energy, land preservation and ocean-cleanups, make sure your money support those things too! There are banks out there only investing in green businesses and I chose to move my money to @amalgamated_bank , but you can do your own research! ☺️ . . Money is power! It can make or break our world, depending on where we choose to place it. So make sure YOUR money is intentionally placed where it will do the most good. I know switching banks can feel like a huge task that you’d like to put off, but it’s really not that big of a deal when you think about it. We only have about 7-10 more years to figure this out so we can’t afford to go backwards - DO WHAT YOU CAN DO TODAY!! And ask your friends to follow-suit. #moveyourmoney . .
