The importance of hand grenades was discovered pretty early on in World war one, they gave you the ability to clear trenches and deal with enemy troops in a new way. Grenades existed early on and it is not a "recent" invention but it made a comeback in world war one where they were used extensively.

The British realised the importance too and made 75,000,000 in world war one. They had the mills bomb, which was pineapple shaped. The grenade, the mark 5 mills bomb was ~680g(figures vary) and was one of the heavier ones. The grenade had a pin that was pulled and then it had 5(or 7, according to soldiers in ww2) seconds until it went boom. Now the mark 5 was a defensive grenade. You could not yeet it farther than the German stick grenades, because there was no stick. It also had fragmentation but the fragmentation was not along the grooves you can see on the mark 5. These grooves were for grip. The fragmentation happened all over. The longest distance you could throw is 30 metres. Overall the mark 5 was excellent, if a bit limited in offensive use.

The Germans have the legendary steilhandgranaten, which could be thrown further because of the stick. It had less explosive power but made up for it in 1916 with a different explosive than ammonium nitrate. These sralheindgranaten were used for more concussion and wounding the enemy but not your own troops. They did present problems in transportation because if the bulk.
