The prompt this time for me to take the hook was the Jim Pepper LP Comin’ and Goin’ (Europa Records, 1983) with its version of Pepper’s classic number ‘Witchi-Tai-To’. First Nations American saxophonist Jim Pepper learned the peyote chant at the heart of the composition from his grandfather, a peyote priest of the Native American Church (a syncretic religious movement combining Indigenous beliefs with Christianity). I love the lines: Water Spirit feelin' springin' round my head Makes me feel glad that I'm not dead . . I first heard the composition on Jan Garbarek’s ECM album of that title and I’m still waiting for a copy of Pepper’s Pow Wow to come my way, but meantime, this version makes me very happy. Along with Pepper on tenor sax, it’s got John Scofield on guitar, Kenny Werner piano, Hamid Drake drums, Lester McFarland bass and Nana Vasconcelos percussion and chants. . . So, when Comin’ and Goin’ appeared on Human Head Records Discogs page, I found a few more to make up a package. All of them were under the $10 mark, most under $5. I’ll post a few of these in coming days.
