started the new year in the workshop with the #150mmchallenge for the @ferrousfestival2019 #measuredmakingexhibition by @herefordanvils - upsetting the 20mm square bar down into a puck - spreaded out into a 3,5mm thick sheet slab - forged vessel containing the exact amount of scale which got lost during the transformation from solid bar to holloware (100g scale in 370g vessel) #blacksmithing #forging #steel #metalart #metal #art #design #craft #metalgestaltung #metallgestaltung #steneby #hdksteneby #holloware #korpus #vessel #bowl #tableware #contemporary

back at home for christmas and finally some time to work through the pictures of the remaining pieces of my Tharsis series. - Tharsis X, the last one so far with the nicest crack, I think. --- The cracks in the Tharsis series appear because of a combination of circumstances: Tensions from cold bending, the enormous punctual heat of the gas torch while melting on the bronze, and the different CTEs of steel and bronze lead to coincidental fractures. I duplicated these hot forged pieces in 925 Sterling Silver, but this time with a solder joint and not from one piece of metal, as in the Steel versions, and sold them for the same price at my exhibition. My thinking was that my audience would see that the Steel pieces were made with time and love and the Silver pieces in 20 minutes. The Silver pieces all sold on the first day of the show and the Steel pieces are still collecting dust somewhere. These pieces were hot forged a Gazillion years ago when I was still a student. Back then, no welding, filing or grinding was really important, now I couldn’t care less. Or maybe I still do. Now I am a teacher at the same school. Thank you @metalarthdk.
