Part of honoring peoples (intellectual boundaries) requires us to validate their experience even if we see a situation differently. If we’ve been in abusive/dismissive relationships, or if we grew up in homes where we did not receive appropriate reflections of our internal experiences, we may struggle to know what this feels like. We may later become easily triggered at the tiny glimmer of our experiences being misunderstood or invalidated. . . Painful experiences of that magnitude can make it very hard to see beyond our own pain, and into another’s. We can become so fixated on being seen ourselves that we lose the ability to tolerate that there are two legitimate and equally valid experiences present. . . If we haven’t had the experience of healthy mirroring of our internal world, then we need to create relationships with those that can do that for us. Otherwise, we may allow abuse or abuse others as we cling to prove our point. We need healthy and safe people to mirror us .. our friends, a therapist, a coach, healing support groups. . . And when we have had that mirroring experience enough times, we can then begin to (validate ourselves) even in the presence of those who aren’t willing to do the same for us. We can then begin to pull from an internal confidence to reach out and validate someone else’s reality (first), even when we ourselves are hungry for it. . . I’m the context of intimate relationships, both partners (often) want their realities validated in the same moment. The challenge thus becomes .. how to support one partner to momentarily surrender their own need to be heard, in order to tend to their partner first. . . Reaching out to comfort and validate our partner when we ourselves are hurting is no easy task. It requires some degree of self-regulation. It requires some degree of trust that our partner will return the same offering back to us once they have felt heard. I believe this is where magic can happen. I believe this is the very space where we begin to learn to expand beyond our limited sense of self. It can become the space where we gift our partner with the very freedom and validation that we seek. #coachingwithsilvy
