Today was mostly overcast but the sun burst through the cloud cover later in the afternoon. This little guy just came out to sunbathe. Western fence lizards use thermoregulation and can change color from black to grey to tan, while basking in the sun. Blue belly is warming up Their bellies are turquoise to royal blue for males and females have faint powder blue to light greenish if even that. #bluebellies #westernfencelizard #herpsofcalifornia

Archive herping. Here is a species I used to have an inordinate fondness for, the Lyre Snake (Trimorphodon lyrophanes). This one was from Inyo county, California near the northern extent of their range in CA. For a while in the 90's I kept Lyre snakes and even managed to produce offspring (I no longer keep snakes in captivity). It was very difficult to get the hatchlings to feed but I eventually succeeded with baby mice that where scented with Sceloporus. They had different temperments depending on the individual. I had one that was mostly calm and another that would show aggressive displays every single time. Once I was bitten on the palm while performing some husbandry task. Both rear fangs sunk into my skin and it started to chew. It took me a few seconds to remove it without injury and I was able to experience a lyre snake envenomation. There was noticable swelling and a tingling sensation. The effects and swelling faded within a few hours.
