What a lucky escape this little one had!! I was on my way to do the final rounds of the evening when I heard lots of squeaking so I ran towards the pond and found a Magpie trying to kill this Mallard duckling. It had poached it from the water and carried it over the fence and obviously dropped it accidentally so it was trying to recapture it, at which point I shouted and clapped my hands causing it to fly off. The duckling was terrified so I approached it slowly and managed to pop it into my jumper - no injuries thankfully, my timing was definitely just right! There was silence on the pond so thought all the other ducklings had been taken too, however, after a few minutes they came out of hiding, unfortunately only 3 out of the original 6 I did think about the possibility of rearing them in the safety of captivity but then again, they are wild and best not to interfere with nature. So, I put it back with its siblings and soon after Mummy duck returns from the sky (as seen in one of the videos). Unfortunately it’s difficult to control the Magpies as I can’t be on patrol 24/7 but I just hope that Mother duck will protect them more aggressively this time (and not fly off!). I’ve spent years wondering how the ducklings disappear into thin air and now I know who to blame .
