Freiburg's Fraunhofer institutes IAF, IPM and IWM want to transfer quantum magnetometry from the field of university research to industrial applications. In close cooperation with three further Fraunhofer institutes (IMM, IISB and CAP), the research team develops highly integrated imaging quantum magnetometers with the highest spatial resolution and sensitivity. The lighthouse project QMag enables the use of single electrons to detect the smallest magnetic fields. For electric vehicles (EVs) to deliver the same reliability as gas vehicles they need lightweight yet powerful batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are the most common type of battery found in EVs today, but their high cost and limited lifetimes are limitations to the widespread deployment of EVs. A couple of days ago, on May 26th, 2019, I finally succeeded with confirmed and reliable ignition of the newest open source prototype thruster, the AIS-gPPT2-1C single-channel gridded pulsed plasma thruster! This marks a major milestone achievement in my open source propulsion work, and a major breakthrough at Applied Ion Systems. This tiny thruster is seen firing at high vacuum, in the upper 10^-6 torr range, at low rep rate with full capacitor charge. This is the first of two videos taken during the test. It's been a real challenging 3 months since I officially started my first open source thruster efforts. 3 unique thruster designs, 3 builds from scratch, and 3 high vacuum ignition tests. 2 failed thrusters, but finally, a working thruster prototype has been achieved! I can finally say that open-source maker-based high vacuum EP R&D at home has truly begun at Applied Ion Systems, and is finally entering the maker community.
