I have a soft spot in my heart for old churches. I can’t help but think of everything their walls have witnessed. The attendees arriving dressed in their Sunday best (the way it should be in my opinion), the births, marriages and deaths, the historical events, and of course my favorite, all the dinners that have been shared on these hallowed grounds. This is Emmanuel Episcopal Church established in 1859 in Delaplane, VIrginia. My youngest Red and I drove by it yesterday, and we stopped to take a few pictures and read the historical marker. I wish you could see the detail of the wavy glass on the windows and read some of the markers in the old cemetery right beside it. And I can’t help but think of that saying “A Sunday well spent”...and I just want to add to it...”in the house of the Lord”... Happy Sunday, Friends. #asundaywellspentbringsaweekofcontent #emmanuelepiscopalchurch #delaplaneva #sunday #hautedownsouthmoveseast
“This image is an experience in light. I sensed the quality of light at the time but could not directly relate it to the photograph. Some intuitive thrust made this picture possible. I had used yellow filters (and red filters with with panchromatic film) for many images in the area, but on this one occasion some gentle angel whispered ‘no filter’ and I obeyed. A darker sky would have depreciated the feeling of light. A more contrasty print also would have destroyed the inherent luminosity of the subject… What mechanisms of the eye and mind select patterns and relationships in an unfamiliar world about us and compose them as expressive images? I can remember making this photograph; with the parameters of the film size and the focal length of the lens set in my subconscious, I seemed to know precisely the square yard of earth on which to place my tripod. There was no hesitation in this, and no change of position; the image appeared on the ground-glass in almost ideal placement… We should never deny the power of intuition or hesitate to follow its revelations. I have found that when I have to labor over a composition I seldom achieve anything worthwhile… It seems as if the mind is constantly churning facts, moments, relationships, and concepts, and reverberating to the input of information and the flowering of emotion. It is essential that the artist trust the mechanisms of both intellect and creative vision. The conscious introspective critical attitude has no place in the luminous moments of creative expression, but should be reserved for later, when the work is complete.” — A.A. in ‘Examples: The Making of 40 Photographs’ (Little, Brown and Company)

Built right into a vertical cliff face on Italy’s Mount Baldo, Santuario Madonna della Corona (Sanctuary of the Lady of the Crown) looks as though it is suspended in mid air. Nearby Residenza Stella Alpina is an ideal place to stay and to enjoy your holiday in the Alps

The church you see here is Mt. Zion Baptist, built in the 1800s in the once-bustling river town of Rodney Mississippi.
At its height, Rodney was big enough that 3 churches were needed to serve the town. Today, 2 of those churches still stand here; the 3rd was relocated to a nearby memorial park and restored.
The 2 remaining churches (this one and Rodney Presbyterian) still stand in this time capsule of a town- but who can say for how long.
Today, they are both endangered by the rising Mississippi River that has had a record breaking flood season.
In fact, this church was underwater for days (possibly longer) earlier this year and is currently being threatened again by rising waters as I type this.
If she isn’t relocated to higher ground, this one will be lost forever and pretty pictures will be our best connection to a very special piece of history.
Check out my stories for the link to the full history of this fascinating ghost town!

“If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday"
The color image was taken back in 2015, during my first visit to the ghost town of Rodney, MS. I had been waiting and planning for this day for nearly 6 years at this point. My first visit didn’t disappoint.
As I approached this grand brick facade, I was overwhelmed with thoughts of all the days that this church had stood leading up to that day.
How many people have walked through these doors?
How many worship songs have been sang inside?
How many lives were remembered here before being interred up the hill?
How many more days will it stand?

Do you like sacral art?
A very decadent time at 1657y UNESCO church in Poland.
Protestants were able to build a church after swedish invasion under 3 requirements:
1. All built of only unstable materials: wood, straw, clay
2. Was built further than cannon shot range outside city walls
3. Building had to be finished within 1 year
A magnificient building was finished in 9months. With 3 levels high, it can store up to 3500 persons.
I am big enthusiast of antique wood carving and oil paintings thus I felt wonderful in this place .
