A view by the sea of Tower House, with HMS Victory represented on its weather vane, taken from the 15th Century Round Tower in Portsmouth, on England's south coast. Tower House had been a complex of stores, chambers and wharves until 1906 when it was acquired and converted by the maritime artist W L Wyllie, who added the house's tower as his studio. Here he could sit and paint, so close to the water's edge that he could almost touch the ships passing by!. . But from his studio Wyllie could also see the gradually decaying HMS Victory - launched in 1765 and best known for her role as Lord Nelson's flagship at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. A campaign by Wyllie and others for the Victory's restoration finally came to fruition when work began in 1922, and by 1928 King George V was able to unveil a tablet celebrating completion of the work - in reality just the first stage of an ongoing restoration.
