#OnThisDay in 1881, Denver's Union Station opened. ⠀ ⠀ .⠀ The railroad expansion was a key factor that helped build the city of Denver. To accommodate the growth, Denver needed a central station to help transfer passengers and freight between competing railroads.⠀ .⠀ After a fire in 1894, the present day building was completed in 1914 with wings from the original building. The new building exhibited the Beaux Arts style. The addition of the iconic Welcome Arch, also known as the “Mitzpah Arch,” was added in 1906 and was a symbol that greeted travelers until it was removed in 1931 for traffic safety.⠀ .⠀ In recent years the Station received one of the largest historic tax credit projects in the state.
