A captivating tanned Jean makes herself presentable in her hotel room before setting off for Jean Harlow Day at the World’s Fair, June 13, 1933. The previous day had been declared Jean Harlow day for the entire city of Chicago; this subsequent Jean Harlow Day was exclusive to the Exposition.
Jean is shown in another lovely candid at the fair, donning one of her favorite outfits from this year. Harlow signed many autographs and is seen being squired around the fair with throne and parasol.
A discrepancy with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer led to some negative publicity on Harlow’s part. As previously stated, she intended this to be purely a personal trip for her own enjoyment; she was to attend with her pen pal Stanley Brown.
After her departure had already been delayed for retakes on HOLD YOUR MAN, MGM’s publicity department wanted her to appear for the fair’s “celebrity night”. Harlow had already been nearly assaulted, chased, and cornered by fair attendees. She flatly refused to appear. This news came only after her “Celebrity Night” appearance was widely publicized. Thousands of people gathered, only to be told Harlow wasn’t appearing due to be being “too tired”. It was partially the truth.
Jean left Chicago early, her vacation mostly being sabotaged by frenzied fans and her home studio. To counter some of the negative publicity that came after being “too tired to appear”, it was falsely reported that Jean was undergoing an operation for a “minor ailment” at the Mercy Hospital in Chicago. In reality, she was in Kansas City; pictures of her there surfaced on the same day as reports of her fabled ailment.

I loved all of the costumes that Helen Rose created for Grace Kelly in the 1956 film High Society. ✨NEW EPISODE✨ Is That a Corpse in My Culture?
Today we're talking corpses as entertainment. Not the idea of a corpse (sorry, horror fans) but real live – or should we say real dead – bodies. From 18th century Rome, to 19th century Paris, to 20th century Hollywood, when can corpses be important educational tools, and when are they only tasteless shock value? Who gets to decide? Enjoy, and thank you for your support of Season 2 of DITA
(Continued from last post.) We remember a woman who despite her qualms about her screen image, loved her fans and recognized her relationship with them.
“As long as I am the “platinum blonde”, as long as I appear in décolleté gowns and sexy love scenes, as long as I am Jean Harlow, I am going to be discussed. It is the price that my kind of screen character pays for her fame, her MGM contract. I have always tried to be truthful and frank with the public about Jean Harlow. It is the least I can do.” — Harlean, quoted in December 1933.
There is so much more I want to say about Harlean. Her existence continues to inspire me on a daily basis and I can never thank her enough for that. I can never express how deeply grateful I am to have discovered and loved her. She’s so much like me, down to the little things; like an affinity for comfort and picking off nail polish when stressed.
Harlean, I love you. You’re eternal and you live on in our hearts forever. We lost you far too soon; we can only speculate the heights your career would have risen to. Thank you for being a beacon of light in my life.

Jean photographed by Clarence Sinclair Bull on December 16, 1930 for THE SECRET SIX (1931), her first ever role with MGM. She met two figures on the set who would make frequent appearances in her subsequent career; George Hurrell and Clark Gable.
Harlow, Gable, and Wallace Beery, who all had roles in THE SECRET SIX, would reunite for CHINA SEAS in 1935.
A quote from Clark Gable remembering THE SECRET SIX, which appeared in The Philadelphia Enquirer in 1935:
“[...] I remember a day when he [Wallace Beery] stopped a scene and scolded Jean because she insisted on keeping the back of her head to the camera. She flared back at him with some quick remarks, and then they went on with the scene, and it was one of the best in the picture. I think that one incident made them friends for life.”
Gable actually had the wrong impression, as Beery was one of the only costars Jean never got along with. The quote shows her determination to be a great performer more than anything.
